Yeah Empire closes at noon. But they have bialys? I wasn’t looking for decent bagels in the Bx, that’s not an issue. I’m looking for bialys.

Nothing like a good bialy bro. Onion bialy with cream cheese. I’ll take it over one of these brick-sized bagels any day, but up here in the Bx I can’t get find em. Not even in New Rochelle.

It was old people sipping coffee and yuppies buying pastries, no sit downs, no track suits, nothing like that. Same with that tile store that's supposed to be 'connected' - never saw shit outside of there.

You're going to have to find someone really old for any stories or info on the hodge podge of crews that were there back in the day. I know historically the Genovese and Gambinos have roots there...but that's historically... like Lanza's restarurant, Nino Gaggi I believe was from Avenue A when he was a little kid, etc. - generations ago
DeRobertis was really something. The tin ceiling and floor tiles predated the bakery, which was started in 1904. I never actually lived down there (or anywhere in Midtown or Lower Manhattan), but without knowing the history I’d have never guessed that it had any notable LCN connections in the past, just based on the area since the 2000s, of course.
Cannoli were like a 7/10 there compared to the soggy ones at veneiro's that get a 4/10. Sflogliatelle good at both. LanzJohna's had great Tripe but the rest was just decent. John's of 12 street (where you soprono's freaks remember tony kicking the guys teeth or something after the guy told jamie lynn sigler that she had cream on her mouth.) was pretty good. Myron passed away and I think left it to Nicky, his old partner. haven't checked for some 8 yrs now. that food was passable but Myron was the best. When that Vegan place, that nobody could get into, opened up= he put "vegan choices" on the awning to get the overflow from there as ppl were literally on the street next door on the corner trying to get into the place---he would cook the steaks in the same pan as the vegan shit.RIP

Nicky the blonde used to be in there allllll the time (veneiro's)

personally I go for a bialy over a bagel.
Salut’, same here, my man. Every time, but bialys are getting harder to find lately as well.
Tell me about it! Most of the places these days that do have bialys buy them rather than make them which is a disappointment. What I wouldn't do for a lightly toasted bialy with butter from Bell on East 80th and Flatlands Ave. Any Canarsie people here will definitely remember that place!
Even when I lived by the border of freakin Boro Park it was hard to find places that made their own bialys instead of buying them from another place. Up here in the Bronx I can’t even get that though. Not sure why bialys are becoming an esoteric item, most people who have had them prefer them over bagels IME.
with you, man.

Polack- where are you in the BX? the bagel places down here (between Canal and Battery Park on far west side) there are a couple of places like Zucker's all the way on Chambers that blows but the pick a bagel in the Goldman building is good. near the Harry's pizza and shakeshack--right on the south side of the movie theater. i forgot, do russ and daughters sell bagels or just the fish? 430 am and im fucking starving.

Fuck that place--its in Siberia lol. talk about off the beaten path. Took a shit there once on my birthday. I was running from Tribeca all the way around past the Ferry and up the FDR when I got to Grand where I was going to turn around, I sprinted over one of the overpasses and up Grand till I found that place and begged. cocksuckers made me buy something so what do you think I got? A bialy is a lighter bagel. fraction of thickness with no hole in the middle.

Chicago at least used to have some great Jewish bakeries and delis. When I go back I’m in West Rogers Park a lot as my in laws live there and Devon Ave farther west seems to be losing its Orthodox Jewish community in recent years (definitely not like how it was back in the day). Not sure if they’re moving out to the burbs, or out of Chicagoland. From what I can tell most of the real Jewish stuff is out in the N/NW burbs now.
Still very Jewish west of California. Pretty crazy area diversity wise.. Orthodox Jews, Muslims in hijabs, Indians, Russians, Mexicans, ect all walking down Devon.

Suburbs wise obviously Skokie and Lincolnwood are the big ones. Morton Grove, Niles, Glenview, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove do as well.

North shore is another obvious one (Highland Park especially) but it's also WASPY too.

I'm a South side guy so not many Jewish people but we do have the best Jewish deli in the city.. Manny's :D
