Joseph P. Lombardo
BUSICO related cocaine charge. He sold 3 ounces of cocaine for $5,100 to an informant who was working with the FBI in the operation.

Lombardo owned funeral homes in Buffalo and several of its suburbs. He was active in several civic groups and was the president of the Lackawanna Chamber of Commerce which named him its Man of the Year in 1987.


FBI documents on Joe Todaro Sr. from 1981 indicate a Joseph Lombardo received permission from Buffalo mob leadership to reopen a bookmaking operation in the Buffalo area. However, at the time of Joseph’s BUSICO arrest in 1988 law enforcement authorities told the Buffalo News that he had “no known mob ties.”

Depending on which Joe Lombardo these FBI documents referred to… that statement may have been not true or could have been technically true. Members of the Lombardo family have had numerous run-ins with law enforcement regarding gambling and book making tied to the Buffalo mafia.

Joseph A. Lombardo Sr. (d. 1928) married to Catherine (nee Italiano). Joe ran the funeral home on Swann St. and Catherine got her license and took over when he died.

Nicknames are often inherited so they could have both used it.

Yeah, I wonder both Charles’s (Don’s Dad and brother) were made. Interesting that the nickname for Don’s brother Charles was Turtle according to Charle’s obituary. Makes me wonder if the FBI assigned the wrong moniker to Don.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Joe Bonanno yet. He says in his autobiography, that he was a part owner of the Anello & Bonanno Funeral Home. Gay Talese, in his biography of Bill Bonanno, says Frank Labruzzo was a mortician and was a partner with Joe Bonanno in a funeral parlour. Talese also says that Labruzzo worked as a part-time undertaker in a funeral parlour that Joe Bonanno was a part owner of. The source for Gay Talese, for these stories about Frank Labruzzo, is obviously Bill Bonanno. It is not clear if all these stories about funeral parlours refer to one or more funeral parlours.

Donald Panepinto, if related, it is a more distant relationship.

Alfred Panepinto moved to Niagara Falls from Batavia in 1928 and became the mortician on record at the Panepinto Palmeri Funeral home at 496 19th Street in Niagara Falls. He was related to Sam Pieri via Sam's marriage to Carrie LoTempio. Alfred Panepinto dissolved his partnership with Paul Palmeri in early 1937 after he had trouble with some gangsters from Buffalo and the Falls. He was murdered later that year while playing poker at the LoTempio Pool Hall in Batavia. Panepinto's demise followed the 1936 murder of Frank LoTempio the cousin of Rose (LoTempio) Alfred Panepitno's wife. Frank was a bookmaker from Batavia who was not paying tribute to Magaddino. Hunt in his book [i] DiCarlo Buffalo's First Family of Crime[/i] indicates that Alfred Panipinto was the final casualty in Magaddino's war against Batavia bookmakers.

I heard of a few caskets that contained 2 bodies - one on top and one concealed underneath!

BTW Charles Durante ran Roberts Funeral Home for Perna. He committed “suicide” but LE had called his death suspicious. I believe he died the night before Bongiovanni was arraigned. Dennis Durante was involved in LCN drug trafficking.

Frank Perna in Buffalo started what is now the Perna Roberts Dangler funeral home. Many of those associated with Buffalo LCN have been or has had family buried by them.

Was Guy Paneptino "the discount casket guy" from Toronto made? It's hard to know with some of the Canadians.

Yeah Baganasco in Detroit. That place pops up all the time. The original owner getting killed gangland style in 1938 and the son being Jack Tocco's brother in law and identified member. I think all the Detroit mob funerals happen there.
