Renda was born in New York City on Jan. 1, 1959. He married Benedetta Castiglione ("Betty") in Montreal on Jul. 30, 1988, with matchmaker Agostino Cuntrera and wife Elena (née Veltri; has ancestry from Cosenza in Calabria) serving as official witnesses to the marriage. Before and after the marriage, Renda and his wife lived in St. Leonard, which is well known as the Italian quarter in Montreal (east end).

When I post a new thread that will contain profiles of Renda, first cousin Joseph Sciascia, and Lorenzo Lo Presti, don't shoot the messenger when I provide details of a document that run counter to some prevailing beliefs about Renda.

He was born in the US and I've never been able to confirm where his family came from but it was probably Agrigento based on the name.

This 1984 FBI report refers to the Sicilian mafia faction in Montreal being involved in drug trafficking with the Patriarca Family -- Salvatore "Mickey" Caruana was a Patriarca member involved heavily in drugs so he's one possible connection. The Sicilian mafia faction it refers to would have included the Caruana-Cuntreras. It also say the Bonanno decina worked with the Patriarcas.

The Patriarca Family had Biagio DiGiacomo and Salvatore Giglia as high-ranking members with ties to the Sicilian mafia. They were from Aragona which is 35 minutes from Siculiana. Never seen them directly connected to Mickey Caruana outside of their membership in the Patriarcas.

Excellent discovery. Pietro Ligammari was sponsored into the Bonannos by Sciascia so it makes sense.

I think I’m close to confirming that the Peter Ligammari who was one of two official witnesses to Domenico Arcuri Jr.’s wedding is the same person who was found hanging dead with father Giovanni in Saddle Brook, NJ. The newspapers’ reporting of Massapequa, NY as where Peter resided at the time of death — or as where he was from — helped me find a tie to the woman who was also a witness to the wedding.

A Peter Ligammari and a Cinzia Ligammari were witnesses to the wedding. I have yet to look into whether this Peter is the Pietro Ligammari who, along with father Giovanni, was found hanging dead in May 1999, just 9 weeks after Gerlando Sciascia was killed.

The past few weeks I’ve been working on some profiles of first cousins Joe Renda and Joseph Sciascia, as well as a profile of Lorenzo Lo Presti. The info I found about Renda will be most illuminating. My plan is to combine the profiles in one thread, all the while making reference to Gerlando Sciascia and Giuseppe Lo Presti’s ties, hoping to go beyond the close friendship depicted in Lamothe and Humphreys’s book.

Joseph Sciascia and Laura Bruno were witnesses at the wedding of Domenica Gentile and Antonino Arcuri, who, along with brother Domenico Jr., was one of Sal Montagna’s allies.

Interesting. I wonder if it concerned other Canadians (probably in my opinion), but Rizzuto also had lands in Venezuela including notably a ranch which Pasquale Cuntrera, Anonino Napoli, Giovanni Greco & Salvatore "Cicchiteddu" Greco also owned.

I hope everyone who posts in this thread is willing to share not only genealogical findings but also other connections, such as business ties.

One or two of you who follow me on Twitter know that toward the end of Iast July, I posted a screenshot of a corporate profile for a one-time Montreal-based company that was incorporated in 1988 and whose four directors had been Giuseppe Lo Presti, Raynald Desjardins, a Joseph Sciascia, and a Frank Milioto.

I have indeed seen the first name of Desjardins spelled as "Reynald" in a number of places, including books, articles, and company profiles.
