Gravano is deplorable, but the "they let him sell drugs to kids" thing is a little disingenuous, and is getting a little old. In the late 90s and early 2000s the rave scene and pressed ecstasy pills were fucking huge all over the country. His son was of age to be 'around' those type of scenes and got involved. Sammy, not wanting his son to get jerked around, but also seeing the potential and wanting to get in on the action and scale that action bigger like he was used to doing with everything - wedged himself into the business and commandeered his kid's friends. He fancies himself a leader so he'd be the type to find people to boss around no matter what he was doing.
He was bored and saw the potential for easy money. That's it. He wasn't historically a big drug dealer, and there wasn't a governmental conspiracy or coverup for a big master plan that had Sammy "going free so he could sell drugs to kids"
On top of that - kids going to parties and taking E pills back then knew exactly what they were doing. I'm not making excuses for Sammy but every time it's mentioned, it's framed as if him and Gerard were prowling the parks and schoolyards handing out drugs (a drug that isn't physically or really mentally addictive, either) to young children to rope them in.
He sold some ecstasy, got caught, and went to Florence Admax over it.
With that said - again - not making excuses for Sammy. I find him to be a degenerate, and more insufferable and gross with each story. When I read Underboss back in the day I got the exact opposite impression of him. Sounded like a class act when Underboss came out way back in the day. Now that he's out there speaking, I feel much differently.
