I think Charles Bartoli was under Elmwood Park/Grand
Thanks for the pic of Chuckie Bartoli. Also, if he were under Grand/EP then maybe Roemer was referring to him when he listed a "Jimmy Bartoli"?
It could be possible. I think he was with the Aloisios and possibly DeBiase aka the old North/West guys. I also think his name was misspelled in some old files like Bartola or something like that...
Makes sense. If he was still active in the 70s, when I think he was probably released in a counterfeiting charge, then likely Lombardo inherited him.
Any thoughts on his brother Daniel Bartoli, mentioned in the LIUNA hearing?
Yeah i think you and I already talked about the old EP/Grand connection, especially between DeBiase and Lombardo and as you already said, its quite possible that Lombardo inherited him. As for Daniel, i have to be honest that i never really did any research on him.
Speaking about the old North/West, you ever stumbled upon the name Sam Laverda/Laverde? I wonder if he was Loverde instead of Laverda/Laverde....this guy Sam Laverda was allegedly associated with one Mike Farvia and during the mid 1920s, both of them were allegedly connected to Capezio, Heeney and Maddox aka the Circus Cafe gang. Laverde was also questioned regarding the St Valentines Day massacre
Thanks for the info. Very possible that Laverde/Laverde was Loverde of course. There was a Salvatore "Sam" Loverde born 1900 in Brancaccio, Palermo (which I understand to have historically had a very heavy Mafia influence). He grew up near Ohio and Milwaukee Ave, on the eastern end of the Grand Ave Patch. Could be the same guy.
Another thing (not that it's never been discussed before) is that Patsy Lolordo was based out of a spot right next to the Circus Cafe on North Ave. One of the 1929 articles that mentions Sam Laverde states that he was arrested by the Circus Cafe a week after Lolordo was clipped with a group including Farvia and a "John Borcy" who I assume was Giovanni Barcia. See some hints of potentially strong links here between the Circus boys and the Sicilian Mafia.
In 1933 Sam Laverde was a partner with Martin Morici and
Dan Morvetti in the Delmonti café near Halsted and Grand when Rocco Belcastro was killed there. Any idea what happened to Laverde later? The Salvatore Loverde that identified above seems to have died in 1959.
Farvia is a mystery as apart from those reports around the Saint Valentine's hit there's no other info on him. I think Farvia is likely not the actual spelling, could be something like Forfia or Feriva. Who knows.
Thanks a lot bro. Thats some good info. I also think that the Lolordos also had a club right across the Circus Cafe.
Besides the previous info, all I have regarding this Sam Loverde guy is that during the arrests regarding the 1929 massacre, he and his sweetheart, who gave her name at one time as Dorothy Smith and at another as Dorothy Cohn, were taken into custody while riding in "LaVerde's" automobile. In her bag Dorothy carried a notebook with telephone numbers and addresses from many establishments. While investigating the notebook, the cops found the address of an alleged beer flat. In a matter of hours the place was raided and the cops arrested Fred Emery, a known rum runner from Detroit. He was question whether he was in any form implicated in the massacre but Emery denied any associations with the mentioned suspects.
Thanks, was this Emery actually an Emery, or any connection to the Ammiratos?
Also, any idea if the Rocco Belcastro killed in 33 was related to Jimmy Belcastro? There was a Rocco Belcastro from the Grand Ave neighborhood who doesn't seem to have been related (at least not closely), so I'm not sure.
