Bartoli family (Chicago)
Looking to see if anyone has any further info on the Bartoli family, who seems to have had several Outfit connections.
Roemer once listed a Jimmy Bartoli as a "soldier" in the Grand Ave Crew under Lombardo. I haven't been able to confirm any info on a Jimmy Bartoli.
I have seen a Charles Bartoli listed in the past as a likely made member of the Outfit. This was Chuckie Bartoli, who died in 1991 and was a known Outfit figure with arrests for counterfeiting and gambling charges going back to the 30s. I believe that Chuckie Bartoli was born about 1915 in Chicago to Eugenio and Isola Bartoli who arrived in the US in 1910 from Lucca, Toscana. Although Toscani, the family settled around Division and Larabee in the heavily Sicilian Near North Side Italian colony, where Eugenio worked as a fruit vendor. Was it Co fired or just suspected that Chuckie Bartoli was a made guy? Was he with the Northside? (As an adult he loved near Hudson and Armitage).
In a 1997 LIU hearing a Daniel Bartoli was mentioned as an "organized crime associate" along with the likes of Joe Arnold, Mike Glitta, Bobby Dominic, and Ronnie Ignolfo. Chuckie Bartoli had a younger brother named Daniel so I'm assuming it's the same guy. Daniel Bartoli died in 1998.
In the early 60s another of Chuckie's younger brothers, Fred Alfredo Bartoli -- cab company owner and co-founder of Gino's East pizzeria -- was implicated at the center of a big OC investigation in Chicago (the Sterling-Harris scam) involving Illinois State legislator Richard Napolitano requesting licenses from state officials for a bunch of cars that Fred Bartoli bought from Sterling-Harris Ford and transferred to Outfit guys and their family members, likely under the direction of Phil Alderisio and Leo Rugendorf. So far as I can tell while the owners and partners of Sterling-Harris were convicted of fraud, no Outfit guys wound up being convicted of anything. As a side point, another interesting fact is that during this investigation Bartoli admitted to employing Frank Loverde in one of his cab companies, and one of his co-founders in Gino's East was a George Loverde. Given that the Bartolis had longstanding connections to the Northside I wonder if there were old links between the family and Toto Loverde? Fred Bartoli was also onetime president of the Columbus Day parade board, and died in 2004:
Today there's another Dan Bartoli who's a lieutenant in the CPD, and while I'm not positive I think he might be a grandson of Chuckie Bartoli, who seems to have also had a son named Lawrence in the CPD (and funny enough, in a classic Chicago way, the CPD spokesperson on record for giving a statement to the press regarding the murder that happened in front of Richard's Bar -- controlled of course by the Dominic family -- earlier this year was a Kellie Bartoli).

Re: Bartoli family (Chicago)
As a follow up, the George Loverde of Gino's East fame was born Giorgio Loverde in Piana dei Greci/Piana Degli Albanese. It seems very likely that he was the younger brother of Frank "Butch" Loverde. Their parents were Stefano Loverde and Domenica Maisano of Piano dei Greci.
Anyone know exactly where in Palermo Toto Loverde was from?

Re: Bartoli family (Chicago)
Thanks for the pic of Chuckie Bartoli. Also, if he were under Grand/EP then maybe Roemer was referring to him when he listed a "Jimmy Bartoli"?

Re: Bartoli family (Chicago)
It could be possible. I think he was with the Aloisios and possibly DeBiase aka the old North/West guys. I also think his name was misspelled in some old files like Bartola or something like that...PolackTony wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 3:31 pmThanks for the pic of Chuckie Bartoli. Makes sense. If he was still active in the 70s, when I think he was probably released in a counterfeiting charge, then likely Lombardo inherited him.Villain wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 12:19 amIt could be possible. Any thoughts on his brother Daniel Bartoli, mentioned in the LIUNA hearing?

Re: Bartoli family (Chicago)
Yeah i think you and I already talked about the old EP/Grand connection, especially between DeBiase and Lombardo and as you already said, its quite possible that Lombardo inherited him. As for Daniel, i have to be honest that i never really did any research on him.PolackTony wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 7:38 amMakes sense. Speaking about the old North/West, you ever stumbled upon the name Sam Laverda/Laverde? I wonder if he was Loverde instead of Laverda/Laverde....this guy Sam Laverda was allegedly associated with one Mike Farvia and during the mid 1920s, both of them were allegedly connected to Capezio, Heeney and Maddox aka the Circus Cafe gang. Laverde was also questioned regarding the St Valentines Day massacre

Re: Bartoli family (Chicago)
The Bartoli’s had relatives in California as well. My family (Garzanelli’s)was close to them and actually moved with them when they came to California in the early 50’s .. from LaSalle .

Thanks for the info. Your family was Toscano in origin too? Any associations between these families and OC in California that you know of?PaddyWhack wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 11:21 am The Bartoli’s had relatives in California as well. Thanks for the info. Very possible that Laverde/Laverde was Loverde of course. There was a Salvatore "Sam" Loverde born 1900 in Brancaccio, Palermo (which I understand to have historically had a very heavy Mafia influence). He grew up near Ohio and Milwaukee Ave, on the eastern end of the Grand Ave Patch. Could be the same guy.Villain wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 9:37 amYeah i think you and I already talked about the old EP/Grand connection, especially between DeBiase and Lombardo and as you already said, its quite possible that Lombardo inherited him. Yes Toscano in regards to my family, No not that I’m aware of in regards to OC and the Bartoli’s .. AJ Bartoli was a doctor and his wife Isabel a nurse, but his brother Pete was iffy , he could very well have been, . My family on my mothers side owned Garzanellis supper club way back when, and adopted my cousin who ended up connected in California under the umbrella of the outfit.
Here is Isabel’s obit , she is quoted has helping OC figures.

Another thing (not that it's never been discussed before) is that Patsy Lolordo was based out of a spot right next to the Circus Cafe on North Ave. One of the 1929 articles that mentions Sam Laverde states that he was arrested by the Circus Cafe a week after Lolordo was clipped with a group including Farvia and a "John Borcy" who I assume was Giovanni Barcia. See some hints of potentially strong links here between the Circus boys and the Sicilian Mafia.PolackTony wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 1:13 pmThanks for the info. In 1933 Sam Laverde was a partner with Martin Morici and
Dan Morvetti in the Delmonti café near Halsted and Grand when Rocco Belcastro was killed there. Any idea what happened to Laverde later? The Salvatore Loverde that identified above seems to have died in 1959.
Farvia is a mystery as apart from those reports around the Saint Valentine's hit there's no other info on him. I think Farvia is likely not the actual spelling, could be something like Forfia or Feriva. Who knows.

Re: Bartoli family (Chicago)
Thanks again for info. Seems as with many Italian immigrant families of the era, they had their connections to the Mafia that they eventually move beyond as they attained greater success and assimilation in American society.PaddyWhack wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 1:34 pm Yes Toscano in regards to my family, No not that I’m aware of in regards to OC and the Bartoli’s .. Thanks a lot bro. Thats some good info. Besides the previous info, all I have regarding this Sam Loverde guy is that during the arrests regarding the 1929 massacre, he and his sweetheart, who gave her name at one time as Dorothy Smith and at another as Dorothy Cohn, were taken into custody while riding in "LaVerde's" automobile. In her bag Dorothy carried a notebook with telephone numbers and addresses from many establishments. While investigating the notebook, the cops found the address of an alleged beer flat. In a matter of hours the place was raided and the cops arrested Fred Emery, a known rum runner from Detroit. He was question whether he was in any form implicated in the massacre but Emery denied any associations with the mentioned suspects.
