The 80s and 90s were really the downfall of LCN, I think that for the Sicilian mafia, also seeing the huge publicity that Riina caused at that time, ironically it was the "height" of the visibility of the mafia, as well as its downfall.
Interesting that I saw in a documentary that in 2011, according to the FBI, LCN still had 3,000 members and associates across the country, is there so many people associated with the mafia?
I have read some estimates that say the Genovese family alone has 2,000–3,000 associates. I don't know how accurate that number is, and it also depends on your definition of associate, but I don't think it's unrealistic to assume that the average soldier could have 10–15 associates under them.
The ratio of associates actually "on record" with a made guy in New York was more like 4 to 1 according to what I have read. Anyway, it also depends like you said on how "liberal" a definition of the word "associate" means.
I imagine a
lot of the "700 made guys" are also basically inactive as far as crime goes. I wouldn't be shocked if the ones with de facto "inactive" status number in the triple digits.
but probably there are also unknown made members who compensate the reputed inactive; is gene gotti considered inactive, for example?
Gene Gotti was at Michael Roccaforte's brothers wake not long ago with other Gambinos and Capeci said when he was being released that he's still in good standing with the family. I imagine Gene Gotti will be involved in some capacity until death. He doesn't strike me as the type to 'retire'
Good point on the unknowns. Who had ever heard of Frank Camuso or Domenico Acquista until they were revealed to be captains. There's a few guys who can fly under the radar and of course others who have been recently inducted.
