He was strong right after the Anastasia killing and had no heat on him till the Valachi hearings. Anslinger used to put out lists all the time along with constant press releases, he may have mentioned Gambino elsewhere.

By the 1970s he seems to have been considered the top boss.

The Joe Bonanno summary is peculiar, he has him as a former Al Capone gunman, and his main crime seems basking in the sun.

It's not a list of most powerful bosses, but the mobsters who played the biggest role in the illegal narcotics trade.

Back in the early 50's-60's, the Mannarino Faction of the family were much more powerful and connected than the LaRocca/Genovese faction. Only because the Mannarino brothers were in bed with Lansky and Traficante with the Cuban Casinos as well as the Calabrian N'Drangheta

santo sorge was a member of sicilian mafia close to the boss calò vizzini, probably involved in the french connection he was a heroin trafficker, i dindn't know he was considered so powerful in the states
