It seems a lucrative racket from the get-go. Do they still do this in NY? Any family?
The last gasoline-related case I'm aware of is the one below from 2001. Involved the Russians and Luccheses.

Definitely Franzese first before Casso. Iorizzo said that he got into business with Franzese in 1981 which coincides with Michael's timeline.

So, yeah, question wasnt about the origins of gasoline bootlegging, ( It actually looks to be an interesting topic..) but between Fanzese and Casso, who was the first to be involved..

I'm thinking Franzese, hes the one who got the big indictment...

Nice, I stand corrected. But that wasn't my question....

I asked WHO had the gas tax racket first, Casso or Franzese, not about the first instances of gasoline bootlegging in history, lol, someone is lying. I'm wondering which one, Franzese or Borello...

Lol, name a gasoline bootlegger then.. Or post a link to an major arrest or indictment of the Gas syndicate lmao....

Hunders of other cases...so Bert is right. The racket was there even before both Franzese and Casso were born  8-)

You know what, also... I can't help but wonder...

Why did they STOP doing this racket? It seems like all you really need is a front guy for the paperwork. Sell your gas, keep the tax money, close up shop, rinse repeat. I'm assuming they passed some law that made it harder....

A while back, I was in a gas station, and the, I dunno, Arab guy was raving at a customer, they were like haggling over the price of someshit, when he said, " We don't even make nothing off this gas!" I found it kind of an intriguing statement......
The same place recently raised their tobacco prices, which I also thought interesting...

I've always found the Gas Tax racket interesting, Franzese himself? I mean, whatever, lol...

The question really was centered around Casso. If he got into the Gas racket first, then this would have coincided right around the time he became underboss, and around the time DeCicco approached him about Paul.

It never has really made a whole lotta sense why Casso and Amuso were chosen over some guys who were more established. If he brought this new emerging, lucrative racket to the table, it would maybe explain some of why they picked him.

Funari seems to have had the most say in the families choice of successor, I don't know if there was ever a deep dive into Funari. Seems to have been a highly respected killer, not one of the big earners, I dunno...

I'm also trying to figure why Franzese got indicted for being the ringleader, if Casso was the bigger fish.

But like I said, I think it's just Borello throwing darts, Franzeses is his internet/podcast comp now I guess, lol
