I can’t think of one wise guy that was actually a good person. That treated anyone besides their own flesh and blood good, and sometimes I think not even them.
To say all are scum bags is way off, and to say it of your own grandfather, who probably was not even in the Mafia is pretty fucked up of you to do. Junior is not as hated as Alite, and the stories of Junior Gotti being hated by every wiseguy is untrue, although a few obviously do, some out of him getting where he was due to his father.
No, I don’t think that’s way off at all. I get that the intended purpose of the mob, was as a means to have a livelihood most of them having come from poverty. But the murder, extortion, prostitution, gambling, and trafficking are all scummy things. There are literally a long list of gangs, not nearly as organized of course as the mob and their families, but they are all considered scum bags. What makes them any different? That they’re a bunch of Mexicans or blacks in rags and not a bunch of fat Italian guys in suits? A criminal is a criminal regardless of the cloth they’re cut from, and they’re scum bags all the same. My great grandfather was absolutely a scum bag, well respected but was a scum bag all the same. Everyone on my father’s side of the family knows it, and it’s ok. They don’t care, because they know as well as I do, that you don’t get involved in that kind of life and still be an upstanding good law abiding person. It’s not fucked up, it’s just the way it is.
I used to sell drugs, I took advantage of people’s weakness and subservience to addiction for financial gain. I did it to support my wife, and my family during hard times, before starting a legitimate business. Could have lost the family home that’s been in my family for four generations if I didn’t start selling drugs when I did. I’m happy to be finished with that chapter of my life, because I was such a scum bag despite my noble intentions of having done so.
