Is there a way to find out who each individual was or is that keep classified forever?

No I’m kidding, but really, what did the T stand for? If I had to guess I would say something like “Top”, because clearly these are important informants.

T means Temporary, so a T number is a temporary number. If the source was kept on he or she would be given a permanent symbol and number. A criminal source was usually given a C number, for example.

I have no clue, but I believe they called people like Greg Scarpa “top echelon” informants or sources, so that might be why. Top echelon in regards to their status in the underworld.

Gregory Scarpa Sr. was enlisted as a top echelon informant as early as '61.

Correction: Valachi was T-8.

In FBI File: NY 92 - 2300, "T" symbol informants number from 1-232.

Valachi is commonly believed to be the one of the first top echelon informants, actually #7. Scarpa must be a lower number. (1-6).

I would like to identify as many "T" symbol informants identities, as possible for the edification of the forum's many researchers.

Hopefully this thread will accomplish that.
