He owned it for decades! His brother Oscar and later Bobby actually ran it for years! It’s since moved off the corner. But I believe the Ianiello Family still has it!
Umbertos moved I believe 3 times. the "bullet holes" are still a tourist attraction at Hester and Mulberry street. if you go down there at any fest and find a local they love to point it out to people.
Also, I remmember that he sold it to i wanna say Punchy Illano... which is ironic bc he was one of the original Gallo members before switching to the West Side.

Was Matty a capo at this time?
I don’t know about Punchy, but The Blast bought Ca Sabella from Mikey Sabella years ago.... a few doors away
Yk u might be right it was CasaBella but Umberto's I still believe has been sold

Maxie, on one hand you say to everyone don't believe reporters on the Gallo hit then you quote a BOOK that mentions all the LoCicero guys from 40 fucking years ago that you "waited to mention" cause they are all dead as your proof.... unless you were stuffing your face with clams when Gallo got his or you have an in with the NYPD to read investigative files, it is what it is, your conclusions based upon your research. Now I think you are right and Sheeran is full of it but only a fool is certain.

If I remember correctly it was in the newspapers also at the time. But as a state murder case, needing two witnesses/co-conspiritors to bring a case, LE never could put it all together. But I believe this was the prevailing theory.

Sonny Pinto disappeared never to be heard from again (either dead or on the the lam), fungi and the brothers were never indicted. Lack of evidence. But Joe Pesh Luparelli was actually in protective custody for awhile. Then went into hiding for having ratted!

There was an “open” contract! That he had to die! Wherever, Whenever,..... it could be done!

They heard he was at Umberto’s! Whether it was Matty’s Place or not meant nothing in the end!
-
At the time, the theory was that Gallo was behind Joe Colombo’s shooting - A BOSS! Fuck Matty Ianiello! Not the place they would have picked but it came from the top! Kill him!!!
- Sonny Pinto, Fungi, Cisco and Benny (LoCicero brothers) - THAT NEVER CAME OUT! were all at a social club on Broome Street at the time (a Colombo hangout). They reached Joe Yak and told him. He said go get em!.......
-
AND THEY DID!..... Period!
-and the rest of ALL the bullshit you guys hear and the bullshit conspiracy bullshit.... is just that, BULLSHIT!
-
PS: [I tell you now ONLY because all the names I just mentioned are dead. And my words CANNOT hurt anyone!]
-
And that IS the whole truth fellows! .... LOL..... Believe me or don’t believe me! .... that’s all on you! I personally don’t give a fuck!
-
Not to be a know it all! ...... But THIS I know! 😎
-
DO NOT believe most of the reporters stories you read! About this or most of the mob baloney they put out!
-
BTW: the LoCicero’s..... that’s so singular in nature it’s not even funny! (Kinda changes mob history no?) lol
-
If fact, there was a book, I forget the name but it was co-written by or about Joe Luparelli that lays out the killings and mentions those guys and (except the true identify of Cisco and Benny). It was in the newspapers also and there were some prosecutions. Not for murder but contempt etc.
-
So the true evidence is there to back this up!

It led to him getting more FBI scrutiny, and news coverage. That led to a lifetime of indictments and prison time. He was doing fine before that.

If memory serves I don't think any of this had an adverse effect on Ianiello at all. In fact a few weeks afterward they included new dish to the menu. It was called Pasta con Piombo.

Don't take this comment serous, it's a joke. :D

Perhaps he shouldn't have chosen a life of crime then. Shit happens when you're in the mob. He may be lucky he didn't get caught in crossfire, such as that Bonanno mobster who became paralysed by a stray bullet during the three capos elimination. Now that really sucks instead of LE scrutiny that you get anyway when you're in the mob.
I'm pointing out that them killing him in there was a fuck up, and it brought Ianiello into the spotlight and made him a major target. I would assume in the mob you don't do that.
What is interesting that you are pointing out indirectly is that this does make it questionable whether the Colombos were behind this. Surely they must've known who the owner of the joint was. Weren't they obligated to inform him on what was about to happen or even ask his permission? It wasn't as much a fuck up as that it was a "fuck you" to Ianiello and the Genoveses for disrespecting him this way so that makes it dubious the Colombo admin sanctioned this, knowing full well they would put a ranking member of another family on the spot like that. I could imagine there would be repercussions for the ones involved.

Bufalino on the other hand may have not known that Ianiello owned the place so looking at it from that perspective it does make him a more likely suspect. Or perhaps the Colombos were that desperate that they saw it as a unique opportunity to get Gallo, which makes little sense since Gallo wasn't making a secret of his whereabouts (he was showing his face at the Copa of all places). That also makes me question whether he was behind the Colombo murder. Hitting a boss is one thing, not laying low after another, but then again he was called crazy for a reason..
