Italian mob boss Rocco Morabito, known as the “Cocaine King of Milan," escaped from a Uruguayan prison while awaiting extradition to Italy, the interior ministry said.
Morabito is allegedly the head of the 'Ndrangheta crime gang and has been wanted in Italy since 1995. He was arrested in Uruguay in 2017 in the capital, Montevideo, but he had been living in a nearby resort town for over a decade under a false name.
The 'Ndrangheta mafia is suspected to control roughly 80% of Europe’s cocaine trade from its operations in southern Italy.
Morabito and three other inmamtes escaped Sunday and are on the run in South America.
"It is disconcerting and serious that a criminal like Rocco Morabito, head of the 'Ndrangheta, has managed to escape from a prison in Uruguay while waiting to be extradited to Italy," Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said in a brief statement.
He added he would “keep hunting Morabito, wherever he is, to put him in jail as he deserves”.
Morabito was being extradited for prior convictions for links to organized crime and drug trafficking that were issued in absentia.
