Jimmy Lanza stepping down as boss?

I'll admit I'm not well versed in the San Francisco family, but I came across this in Jimmy Lanza's FBI file and thought I'd share:







I'm not sure if this is known, but during August and September 1970, James Lanza seemingly stepped down, and Tony Lima took over.

Did this stick? The 1980s list Scott posted still listed Lanza as the boss and Lima as a soldier.

Evidently not as Jimmy Frattiano said Lanza was the Boss when he (Frattiano) was operating in SF in the mid 1970s.

Lima said later in the 1970s it wasn't recognized and Lanza was still official boss. He was inactive for years though and the Family was completely disorganized.

When I first read about it, it raised the question if someone like Lima could hold the rappresentante title more than once as we know consigliere can only hold it once. Might not have mattered by then.

Sounds like they never got in touch with the Commission and therefore Lanza remained boss. Magaddino's issues with LE, and even his own family only got worse so no surprise they didn't get the message through.

Interesting Lima still took the procedural steps of asking Vincenzo Infusino to step down, and even asked Sciortino to step down to try and reshape the family. Later in the files there's mention of Lima wanting to induct new members to bolster the family.

Wonder if Lima was considered a de facto boss, even though they were largely inactive it seems.

Yeah, Lima said he had some "recruits" he was going to make who were his own people, as he didn't want to do much with the existing members. No idea who they were but he was still traveling to Pittsburgh and keeping some of his old connections alive. He also shelved some guys, among them Steve Trifiro.

Be curious what happened when Magaddino died. Were they reassigned to a new Commission member or were they so far gone they just got forgotten?
