Is there even a commission anymore?
I think the title says it all. The current state of La Cosa Nostra in the US is probably on the brink of collapse. The feds have hit them so hard it's ridiculous. Street gangs out number them.

Not for nothing, but street gang members have always outnumbered LCN members by a huge margin.

The five families still get along but as for the bosses getting together and meeting as a Commission, we haven’t heard anything about that for years. The last commission meeting was probably the one which Joe Massino testified about.

It doesn't make sense to assume that because we're unaware of something that it must not exist. It's like the tree falling in the forest analogy. Does it make a sound if there's no one there to hear it? Besides, we also know from reports that the FBI doesn't reveal most of its information. Even files from the John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson era have redactions in them. So if they have informants telling them about more recent Commission meetings, the FBI is under no obligation to make them public. The best answer to not knowing something is "I don't know."

Funny enough Massino didn't consider that a Commission meeting. He testified that the Commission hasn't existed since 1985 when the Commission case came down. Although Gravano refered to the 1988 meeting between Gotti, Gigante and Amuso as a Commission meeting. Either way as a governing body it hasn't existed since the 1980s.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
Re: Is there even a commission anymore?
It depends on what your context of a commission meeting is ie. Massino

Didn't Todaro up in Buffalo allegedly reach out to the commission when he promoted the new UB? Obviously its not what it was, and I bet they never ever will all sit in the same room as bosses, but I think the it still technically exists
If nobody sees it, it didn't happen.

What would they all meet up to discuss at this point? Which family's rats have the best YouTube channel?

The families seem to do what they want nowadays as opposed to 30 plus years ago. They don’t seem to have to ask permission to make guys they want made. Didn’t before you have to run it by the other families ?
Re: Is there even a commission anymore?
Doubtful that all heads of the major familes have sat in the same room since the 1980's. Any disputes over money or territory are most likely settled through intermediaries and sending messages that way.
Do we call that a commission? Not sure.
Besides, with most of LCN's national rackets that crossed state lines being gone, I can't imagine there is much need to coordinate on a national level.
For what it's worth, of the 3 major contributors to LCN's decline, law enforcement would be last on that list IMO. #1 would be demographic and neighborhood changes, #2 would be loss of traditional sources of income and rackets, and last would be law enforcement.

The impression I get is that the formal Commission is pretty much gone but people still informally refer to inter-family coordination between bosses as "the Commission."JakeTheSnake630 wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 6:51 am Didn't Todaro up in Buffalo allegedly reach out to the commission when he promoted the new UB? Seems like Massino didn't consider it a proper Commission meeting unless it was all five official bosses.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 6:04 amFunny enough Massino didn't consider that a Commission meeting. Yeah, the days of the Commission having national influence didn't really extend past the 1980s. It was essentially a New York enterprise ever since.Coloboy wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 8:29 am Doubtful that all heads of the major familes have sat in the same room since the 1980's. Yeah, as I've mentioned before, in his 10 year anniversary edition of Five Families in 2016 Selwyn Raab said, as a means of discouraging surveillance, family bosses or emissaries were confering on a one to one basis rather than big meetings like in the past. However, he also said the Commission was kept alive to cope with various problems, including threats from other organized crime groups, like Russians or Albanians.
All roads lead to New York.
Re: Is there even a commission anymore?
Considering all but one (possibly two, if we are counting Detroit) of the remaining families are on the east coast and with the advances in technology since the 1930s, the need for face-to-face meetings between families has grown less and less over the intervening years.

Massino didn't consider his meet a commission meeting?
Not to be accused of having a Massino bee in my bonnet but he is full of shit.
Administration representatives from multiple families meeting to discuss Cosa Nostra business is the fucking definition of a commission and is PRECISELY what his meet was for.
What the f did the multiple representatives do? Discuss forming family teams to compete against Merlino's softball league.
Honestly.
