Silvio P. DeVita - Genovese Newark Capo

Post by bababooey »

Does anyone have any info on this crew? I have found very little info about him even on this forum. It looks like he might be the most "senior" of all the NJ genovese capos. The crew used to be ran by Ruggiero Boiardo "Richie the boot" who is a NJ legend up there with Anthony Provenzano "tony pro" etc. On wikipedia it also says that Devita has a super loyal crew and brings over "zips" with his Sicilian ties.

I’ve said this before, he has a beautiful house on the water at the Shore in Toms River.

He’s active in the Newark area. Franklin Ave in Nutley to be exact….

Featured in GL last year. Made around 1991.

His stepfather, Silvio DeVita, a Genovese capo, never worked on the waterfront. He does have a lengthy rap sheet including a conviction for first degree murder during a robbery back in 1951, two years before the bi-state WC was created. DeVita was sentenced to death, but his conviction was reversed on appeal. At retrial in 1958, DeVita was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Released on parole in the 1970s, he's managed to steer clear of any prison stretches since then, although the FBI still carries him as a powerful capo in the Genovese family.

Sources say two DeVita crew members, soldiers Salvatore and Joseph Cetrulo, have four relatives working on the New Jersey docks. And their niece, Michele Caruso, is the wife of Genovese capo Stephen (Beach) DePiro, who was convicted of being a Cernadas partner in a 30-year-long shakedown of Christmastime "tributes" from 1235 members that netted about $3 million for the crime family.

DeVita, 88, and father-in-law Al Cernadas, 85, are both barred from gambling at New Jersey casinos by the state's Gaming Enforcement Division.

Cernadas's daughter Lana, who married DeVita after her first husband Anthony Garcia died, worked as a Local 1235 secretary for years, according to WC records.

That's the same article that said his stepson is now president of ILA Local 1235.

Anyway, stay away from Wikipedia unless something is sourced. There isn't much info about DeVita. He's managed to avoid prosecution for years now.

Pretty incredible he's stayed free for as long as he has. Still a powerful captain at 90 😂 mental

Side note, was doing some random sleuthing online and it turns out Lawrence Ricci's kid (or someone with the same name and it's a coincidence) is overseeing benefit funds for the ILA currently.

I posted something about Ragusa brother running the ILA benefit fund port Newark which is fascinating

That’s brazen and probably speaks to the importance of the job given the access to huge amount of funds / kickback city

I have a bunch of friends that work at the port and they have said the Irish run things pre Covid , possible front for the Italians but I guess that doesn’t extend to the benefit funds.

I have a hunch that the Westside is still very much involved in port Newark. I would of thought they were near dead but I don’t think that’s the case and they are still running penny stock scams to union guys. All kinds of shit going into there , taking whole containers , it’s wild and I can’t imagine the scams during Covid when no one was watching

Sal is a long time Bellville guy

I suspect Dan Dellisanti is in his crew as he is a Franklin Ave Nutley guy

The Luchesse and Gambinos have a kind of social club in Bellville but I’ve never heard of the Westside having one outside of down neck Newark where they have big loan sharking , gambling and money laundering operations . I highly doubt there is a social club in Nutley

Ricci was 60 when he ended up in a trunk.

The Lawrence Ricci with the NYSA ILA benefit funds is listed as living in Montclair and only one person by that name there, who is 54.

Which means trunk music Ricci would be 76 today if still alive and so 22 years older than the younger Ricci, and old enough to be his father.

On top of all that, Ricci's obituary listed a Lawrence Ricci Jr.

Gotta be his kid.

Interesting about Ragusa and Brancato on the Metro-ILA benefit funds.

Funny they still have Louis Pernice listed on the board of trustees though he died last year.

I can't upload the indictment on here its too big. It's probably already on here somewhere. But it listed genovese members and associates on and their positions in the ILA and such and all high ranking positions-all leadership/managerial positions and how long they been in for and it dates back to the 80s. There is no freaking the genoveses is out of the ports, no way after reading that indictment. I mean some of the defendants went to trial and were found not guilty it stated.

The indictment you're referring to is from almost 20 years ago. But obviously they still have a presence on the Jersey waterfront.

Its been a decade since the last case. In the future I wouldn't be surprised if simply controlling jobs and such is the focus, with the more aggressive stuff like shakedowns goes by the wayside.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the 2002 case that included Bellomo, Falcetti, etc. Yeah, the one above is from 2010/2011.

One mystery I've always been curious about...

- An informant reported that he walked in on an induction ceremony in NJ state prison where Ralph Rosania was being inducted by Vincenzo Piazza. Piazza was an extremely violent old Sicilian in NJ who may have been connected to the Newark and/or Genovese families.

- Ralph Rosania was Silvio DeVita's partner from the 1950s murder case. He was eventually released from prison and died some years back in NJ, ostensibly not involved in the mafia.

Just kind of interesting Rosania went through this prison ceremony given his close ties to DeVita. Was the crazy old Piazza making his own prison borgata? Did DeVita have any contact with Piazza?

Curious where in Sicily DeVita is allegedly from.

The thing is long, over 50 pages. Depiro is an interesting guy-goes to church 7 days a week-metrosexual-manicures and things of that nature... Was close to Mikey Coppola (Lardiere hit Coppola) and Tino Fiumara (surveillance of him eating out at steakhouses with him) phone recorded convos cited as well. A somewhat unknown guy with a reputable standing and connected to some of the most powerful members.

It must be weird to work for an organization that is under the influence of the same group that killed your dad.
