I click the report to get updates on LCN activity on the waterfront and get a spiel about diversity and inclusion...they somehow managed to shoehorn George Floyd into a report about organized crime activity in New York and New Jersey. Really gives me confidence that their focus is in the right place!

Yeah, past reports have been heavier on the organized crime presence. I mean, is the job of the Commission really to ensure diversity? Most women don't want to work on the docks, imagine that.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see a list of those who are receiving the excessive salaries, including over $450,000 a year. No doubt some familiar names.

It's important to remember that this is an institution which is fighting for its survival right now and trying to justify its existence. Honestly they probably cynically calculated that in the current political climate, harping on racial issues is a better play than being tough on organized crime.

My understanding is that mob presence on the waterfront is still pretty entrenched, but there's no central control like there used to be.

It seems the remaining mob activity is pretty much on the New Jersey waterfront, where the majority of the shipping is. That's where you still have Dennis Daggett (son of ILA president/Genovese associate Harold Daggett) over Local 1804-1 in North Bergen, Brandon Garcia (Genovese captain Silvio DeVita's stepson) over Local 1235 in Newark, etc.
All roads lead to New York.

Absolutely, second that - this report is clearly political, but the genoveses in the port are still fairly entrenched...there are plenty of court cases about that and the daggett friendship with politicians in NJ is of course very much part of the problem.

LOL at the line about how "disturbing" the lack of female mechanics is. Maybe some of the fellas should start identifying as women to add some true diversity to the waterfront.

Of note is huge Port back ups are slowing down trade all over the US. Port traffic is surging, Port operators are very important keys to the economic system right now . You would have to think the Westside has all kinds of rackets going on right now. Knowing the right people at the port has never been more important.

The WTC is a waste IMO but I do feel that the Westside could get strong down there again without the oversight. These reports have been some of the best info I’ve read. It’s clear the WS still has a legit precense there.

I second that, without oversight it would be even worse. It seems that the interests of the families on the waterfront has never really decreased anyway and if it is not their interest it will be someone else’s anyway...

Genovese's influence at the NJ waterfront has been very under-reported for the last 15 years. Michael Murphy, WCNYH commissioner, acknowledges they have only expanded their operations compared to a decade ago. We don't have to go that far back to see how boldly the Genovese went about their business, too. In 2011 they openly shook down workers at Port Newark and Port Elizabeth to pay them for protection like it's 1951. Both ILA Local 1235 and ILA Local 1478 were probed, and are still assumed to be firmly under Genovese control.

The port is one of the few areas left the govt doesn’t have full control and even they have to give a little . Different rules. They also push all kinds of penny stock scams on the workers that are gullible, big $ too . Still missing container activity. They can connect a lot of people there .

I must have missed that. Do you recall where that was reported?

He was doing a Q&A with reporters at some unrelated event around the time Vito Alberti and others arrested in Operation Fistful pleaded guilty in 2019. A local reporter asked him if the mob is still lingering at the NJ docks like they did 10 years ago, and he said that in his opinion they have expanded in certain areas. There was a youtube video from the session, but the link I had saved shows it was deleted. Maybe some local papers covered it, too. I believe the reporter was referencing this NYDN article when he asked Murphy the question.

As we saw with the 2011 bust...even with Gov oversight of the union the Genovese Family still had control by putting relatives(blood and marriage) into positions in that union. They oust a guy...they replace with another... Last local President was Leonardis who is either the nephew or son of John Leonardis who was the President of the Local 1235 in the 60s then went on to become National President until he died in office (I think in the 70s or late 60s). He is the only guy to not have been indicted while in office or shortly after leaving. Every single President after him has been indicted while in office or shortly after. Its been a countless cat and mouse game. And to add...it is very very difficult to get a job in local 1235..a good job that is. When I was in the my early 20s I tried getting in..and I was pretty well connected thru family to the hiring agent and many others in the 80s. If you can get in..its a good gig. You can make a really good living there.
