Massino Family

Post by JeremyTheJew »

After discussing Massino in a different thread I thought I'd bring a discussion elsewhere.

First off, was the Bonannos really going by The Massino Family like he wanted??? For being so low key and not wanting attention, seems like a self centered attention move but regardless, has there ever been real talk of that or is that made up book gossip? (Which I can believe)

So how powerful was Massino really? He was for the most part the only boss on the streets in his time.

But how powerful can a family really be if one indictment takes it all down.

Who were the main capos AFTER massino flipped??? That's who I say is the real power houses and deserve credit bc they took the worst fall u can and actually built up the family..... again!
HANG IT UP NICKY. ITS TIME TO GO HOME.

The Massino family name never stuck.

I love reading about the Bonanno Family. In everything I have read it seems the name never stuck.

Massino family doesn’t have a good ring to it. It could be as simple as that....

He wanted it as the Massino family, he thought why are we named after someone who talked to a reporter and acknowledged the Commission.

I think most of the time they referred it as Borgata, but guys from other families, according to wiretaps they did call them by what the outside world knows them as, “he’s with the Gambinos,” Etc.

I believe they used “Massino” family, internally, but officially they remained the Bonanno Family. Massino says as much in his testimony, Louie Tartaglione as well

And Massino didn’t flip until they had him on a potential death penalty case, correct? Or is that an excuse he just gave?

Looking back at the testimony it’s not as clear cut. They’re officially called the Bonanno Family(like introductions for example), but when guys are made they’re told they’re a part of the Massino family to establish he is the boss.

Here is the relevant testimony.

I think being the only Boss out the streets for sure increased Massino's prestige within the mafia in NYC as well as the way he was able to build up the family again after they got kick off the Commission and post Donnie Brasco indictments. But I would imagine still not close the power the Genovese Family had during this time, regardless if their official boss was incarcerated.

If you can access the FBI files section, I posted them there a while back.

I remember reading that Massino hated the Chin. Was there any truth to that? I wonder what caused that friction?

I don't recall reading that anywhere but, if true, it could be because Chin shot down the idea of the Bonannos getting their Commission seat back at the meeting between him, Gotti, etc. As Gravano later explained, Chin realized that if the Bonannos got their seat back, it would improve Gotti's position with the Colombo and Bonanno votes backing him in a 3-2 vote over the Genovese and Luccheses.
