A common stereotype in Italy and that all criminal organizations, even those operating in the North, all have a southern origin, that is, local criminals could never have created a structured and powerful organization such as the mafia or the Camorra.
La Banda della Magliana or The Magliana Gang was the first and not the only exception.ù
Born in 1977 when small criminals divided into small groups called batteries decided to meet for a high profile kidnapping and then dominate Rome until the early 90s doing business with politics,entrepreneurship as well as with the Mafia, the Camorra and the Ndrangheta.
Although at its peak it had only 30-40 men to manage rackets throughout Rome, the Gang made history and according to some it would still be active thanks to the members who escaped the various trials or who got out of prison over time.
November 7, 1977 - Duke Massimiliano Grazioli, kidnapped and then killed by mistake;
July 25, 1978 - Franco Nicolini aka Frankie the Criminal ,killed because the Gang wanted his rackets in Tor di Valle racecourse;
August 27, 1978 - Sergio Carozzi, a dealer in Ostia was killed because dared to denounce the extortion of Nicolino Selis
March 20, 1979 - Mino Pecorelli, journalist member of the Masonic lodge P2 Licio Gelli, was killed not far from the drafting of the newspaper in circumstances still not fully understood today;
September 13, 1980 - Franco Giuseppucci, founder of the Gang, killed by the rival clan of the Proietti family, called the Fishermen because of their commercial activity within the fish market of the capital.
January 23, 1981 - Orazio Benedetti, collaborator of the Proietti guilty of having toasted to the news of Giuseppucci's death;
February 3, 1981 - Nicolino Selis known as the Sardinian, after Giuseppucci's death and thanks to Raffaele Cutolo he wanted to take over the power of the Gang;
February 3, 1981 - Antonio Leccese called Goldilk, killed because he witnessed the ambush of Selis;
March 16, 1981 - Maurizio Proietti known as The Little Fish;
October 16, 1981 - Dominic "Memmo" Balducci, the link between the Magliana Gang and Pippo Calò, his mistake was stealing 150 million lire to Calò who sent the Gang to kill him;
November 24, 1981 - Giuseppe Magliolo, known as the killer was murdered because he sought revenge for the death of Selis;
June 30, 1982 - Fernando Proietti, known as the Boxer;
December 14, 1982 - Mariano Proietti killed by Raffaele Caruso;
February 10, 1983 - Angelo De Angelis,a member of the Gang was killed because was robbing part of the cocaine that he must cut;
January 22, 1983 Raffaello Caruso, a small drug dealer killed by the gang because he killed Mariano Proietti without permission;
September 28, 1984 Antonio Giuseppe Chichiarelli, known as Tony, a forger ,member of the gang, responsible for the false release n.7 of the BR in the Moro kidnapping, is killed together with his girlfriend in a way that has never been fully clarified;
March 16, 1989 - Edoardo Toscano, known as the Little Worker, member of the Band killed on the orders of DePedis;
February 2, 1990 - Enrico DePedis, member of the Gang, killed because thanks to his resourcefulness he had become rich with his legal activities, disavowing his criminal origins;
May 25, 1990 - Giovanni Girlando, known as Red John, a member of the gang, dealt with selling heroin to Ostia, was killed on the orders of the Band because he had made himself independent;
November 18, 1991 - Claudio Sicilia, known as Vesuvian, a member of the Band, killed for repenting in the autumn of 1986.

the main difference is the longevity and the structure, the banda della magliana doesn't exist anymore it was dismantled in the early 1990s instead the southern mafias are still around and started over 150 years ago, there are members still criminally active but not even close to the cohesiveness of the past
