Ted Newberry

Post by Dwalin2014 »

I initially thought it was a fictional character from an episode from the 1959 series "The Untouchables", but later I read it was a real character, initially aligned with Bugs Moran, then formed an alliance with Roger Touhy and mayor Cermak to have Frank Nitti eliminated. The hit failed, and Newberry was killed in retaliation. Is anything else known about the character, his criminal career, degree of power in the underworld etc? The only information I found is that he was linked to the Jake Lingle hit with Frank Foster; also, some mention in newspaper archives that, shortly before being whacked, he was tried for selling illegal alcohol but was acquitted, In the TV series, Newberry is convicted on all counts though, was it an allusion to some other trial or is this completely made up?

It was Machine Gun Jack McGurn in The St. Valentine's Day Massacre. 8-)

I believe Newberry took over the remnants of the Northside Gang in the early 30s. He was their last Boss.
