Genovese Hierarchy 1897 to Present Day

Post by Angelo Santino »

I do think its way past time we tackled this Family, similar to the Gambino one that Pogo, B, JD, Antiliar, Lennert and myself made awhile back (https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5481/3053 ... 4d8d_k.jpg).

I've got everything from 1897 to 1936 and will need assistance from then onto present day. However given all the various disagreements and uncertainties perhaps we try and incorporate all or most confirmed sources. I don't think we should present this as The Definitive Genovese Chart but rather list info and provide sources when there is conflicting information. Our job as researchers/information gatherers is not to throw out things that we don't agree with.

I would require the assistance of HK, B., Antiliar and Pogo and whoever else wants to contribute verifiable information. And once again, this isn't 'my' chart but a Black Hand Chart that belongs here and everyone gets credit.

1897-1931's information is here (https://s12.postimg.org/485frrq4t/1900_1931_chart.jpg).

1931-1936
B- Luciano
U- Genovese
C- Costello (Bonanno), Pandolfo(strongly implied by Valachi)

1936-1937
B- Luciano
U- (Acting Boss-Gentile) Genovese
Acting Boss (Valachi) Chae Gusae
Recently another name was thrown around as acting, I believe Moretti or Adonis?

Chris, I missed your post in the other thread asking what the administraion for the Genovese Family was after the Tommy Ryan murder. I just saw it but thought my response would be better to put in this thread instead.

1970:

Jerry Catena - boss (IP)
Tommy Ryan - underboss (acting boss)
Mike Miranda - consigliere

1972:

Jerry Catena - boss (IP), stepped down sometime in 1973 or early 1974
Tommy Ryan - underboss (acting boss), murdered July 16, 1972
Mike Miranda - Consigliere, died in Sept, 1973

After the Eboli murder, the FBI carried Funzi Tieri as acting boss. However on Sept 7, 1972 informant advised that "Philip Lombardo remains as the present boss of the Genovese Family". Another informant advised that Lombardo is a captain. A third informant claimed "Mike Miranda is sick in Florida and Benny Squint and Funzi Tieri are the two top guys with Benny Squint calling the shots". It´s possible there was a ruling panel leading the Genovese Family at this time (Lombardo, Tieri and Miranda) which explains the contradicting info. The leadership set up was not determined until April 1974 when Tieri was recognized as the boss and Eli Zeccardi as his underboss.

1974:

Funzi Tieri - boss (indicted in two or possibly three different cases and ill, trial postponed, two cases dismissed)*
Eli Zeccardi - underboss
John "Buster" Ardito - consigliere

* A ruling panel was installed while Tieri was under indictment and while he was ill; consisting of Zeccardi, Ardito and Dom Alongi. Pete Defeo may have been part of this ruling panel initially but replaced by Alongi.

1977:

Funzi Tieri - boss
Eli Zeccardi - underboss (murdered)
Buster Ardito - consigliere

* Jimmy Fratianno claims that in 1977, Tieri was boss, Zeccardi underboss and Fat Tony Salerno consigliere. And if the info JD posted about the FBI report dated Feb 1978 is correct, then it means that Gigante had been moved up to an administration post by late 1977/early 1978. It also means that Ardito must have stepped down/was demoted. In 1978, an informant advised (this is according to JD) that Rosario "Sally Young" Palmieri was underboss. In my opinion, it´s possible he was acting for Salerno who was imprisoned in 1978.

1980:

Funzi Tieri - boss (retired or "taken down" by Nov 1980)
Other spots on administration unclear.

In November 1980 informant advised "In a place of a boss three individuals, Salerno, Gigante and Lombardo have formed a triumvirate of bosses who runs the Family". This ruling panel was dismantled after the Feb 1981 stroke Salerno suffered.

In Apr 1981 source described that Benny Lombardo is the new boss succeeding Tieri, Salerno is the underboss and Gigante is the consigliere.
There you have it, never printed before.

Good stuff HK, I'll do my best to incorporate all of this info. And again, you'll receive full credit.

So that leaves us the 30's to the 70's and then the 80's onto Present day.

If the Present is too difficult we can cap it at 2000 or 2010 but I have faith in Pogo.

Here is what I have for 1980s to the present.

Boss:
Vincent "The Chin" Gigante (1981-December 2005) Died.
-Stepped back after his indictment in the Windows Case in May 1990. Looks like Michele "Micky Dimino" Generoso may have taken a bigger role in things for a bit during this time period.
-Gigante was imprisoned in July 1997.
-Gigante was the last known official Boss until about 2014.
Liborio "Barney" Bellomo (2014-Present)
-Peter "Petey Red" DiChiara was Identified as Barney Bellomo's Street Boss.

Acting Bosses:
Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno (1981-February 1985) Imprisoned.
Liborio "Barney" Bellomo (1992-June 1996) Imprisoned.
Dominick "Quiet Dom" Cirillo (1996-1998) Suffered a heart attack in 1998. Stepped down.
Frank "Farby" Serpico (1998-2000/1) Indicted in April 2001 as the former Acting Boss so he must have stepped down or been demoted some time before that.
Ernest Muscarella (2001-January 2002) Imprisoned.
Arthur “Artie” Nigro (2002-2003?) Stepped Down/Demoted.
Dominick "Quiet Dom" Cirillo (2003?-April 2005) Imprisoned.
Matthew "Matty the Horse" Ianniello (2005-July 2005) Imprisoned.
Daniel “Danny/The Lion” Leo (2005-May 2007) Imprisoned.
-In 2007 a Ruling Panel was put in place (likely morphing from the committee below). The only identified member on it was Capo Tino “The Greek” Fiumara who died in September 2010. The panel likely continued until Barney Bellomo became Official Boss in 2014.

UnderBosses:
Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno (1977?-1986) Imprisoned.
-Saverio "Sammy Black" Santora (1981-1986) Became Official UnderBoss.
Saverio "Sammy Black" Santora (1986-May 1987) Died.
Venero "Benny Eggs" Mangano (1987-????) Imprisoned in May 1990. Not really clear when he lost his position. He still had it well into the 2000s.
Michele "Micky Dimino" Generoso (1990?-June 1996) Imprisoned.

Consiglieri:
Louis "Bobby" Manna (1981-1990) Imprisoned in June 1988.
-James "The Little Guy" Ida (1988/9-1990) Became Official Consiglieri.
James "The Little Guy" Ida (1990-?) Imprisoned in June 1996. Given life. Unknown when he lost his position.
-It was thought that Peter "Petey Red" DiChiara may be the new Consiglieri for Bellomo but that was never confirmed.

Committee: This committee was put in place after the June 1996 indctment of the administration. It assisted the Acting Boss and took the place of the UnderBoss and Consiglieri. Not exactly sure when each of the following members were put in place but the following members were all identified as being on it.

Capo Alan "Baldie" Longo (Imprisoned in April 2001)
Capo Lawrence "Larry Fab/Little Larry" Dentico (Indicted in April and August 2005)
Capo John "Johnny Sausages" Barbato (Indicted in July 2004 and April 2005)
Capo Mario Gigante
-Guy's like Cirillo, Leo and Muscarella were also on it I believe when they were not serving as the Acting Boss.

Jesus, usually it's harder to figure out who was what the farther back you go. In the Gen's case it's the more recent stuff that gives someone a headache.

Genovese went to prison in 1959 so is it:

B-Gen
Acting- Catena
Was Eboli acting or official UB to Catena?
C- Miranda
Messengers- Michael Genovese, Phil Lombardo?

How long did this arrangement last for before coming to HK's

1970:

Jerry Catena - boss (IP)
Tommy Ryan - underboss (acting boss)
Mike Miranda - consigliere

Later period? Do you mean in the 1950s? Moretti was dead by then. Costello had legal troubles periodically from appr 1952 til he was shot in 1957. Did time in between 1952 and 1953. And again in 1956. Jimmy Alo was acting boss in 1956.

I believe what the informant meant by "Eastern Syndicate" is actually the Genovese Family. I have no record of who was acting boss in 1952 and 1953.
I'm surprised that Alo would be an acting boss when Genovese was available. I could see Genovese as acting boss and Alo as acting underboss.
I can include Alo in this, we can add an *. If so, would it have 1956 since Costello was shot in 57? Maybe he was stepping back which gave Genovese his chance?

Regarding Alo replacing Costello, Antiliar found that an informant advised in Aug 1956 that a deciscion had not been reached.

Late 1980's/early 1990's - Barney Bellomo made acting boss after Vincent Gigante is indicted in the Widows case, though one report claimed it had happened prior to that.

June 1996 - Barney Bellomo indicted. Dominick Cirillo becomes acting boss.

May 1998 - Dominick Cirillo steps down after a heart attack. Frank Serpico follows as acting boss but steps down some time between then and April 2001 when he's indicted as the "former" acting boss. Whenever that was, apparently Ernie Muscarella followed as acting boss.

January 2002 - Ernie Muscarella indicted as acting boss. An later FBI report in November 2008 said Muscarella had been on a ruling panel with Dominick Cirillo (not clear how long he was out of commission from his 1998 heart attack) and Danny Leo. The report also confirmed that Nigro, who was reported to be acting boss in November 2003, succeeded Muscarella on the panel when Muscarella went to prison.

December 2002 - March 2005 - This was the time frame of Garcia's (Jack Falcone) undercover work. At some point during this, Garcia said Pasquale DeLuca was acting boss (possibly on ruling panel?). The November 2008 FBI report mentioned above DeLuca had been a captain of a different crew than the Bellomo/Muscarella/Nigro crew. Possibly Leo's???

April 2005 - Dominick Cirillo indicted as acting boss.

July 2005 - Matthew Ianniello indicted as "an" acting boss, as opposed to "the" acting boss. This is wording is probably intentional by the feds, which suggests he was on the ruling panel.

December 2006 - Danny Leo identified as acting boss (from his previous position on the ruling panel) and indicted as such in May 2007.

June 2009 - NY Daily News article identifies Benny Mangano, Ernie Muscarella, Barney Bellomo, and Larry Dentico on a "rotating panel" of recently released senior members running the family.

September 2009 - NY Times article identifies Tino Fiumara as being on a "three man panel" running the family.

February 2010 - Artie Nigro indicted as the "former" acting boss.

February 2014 - Wall Street Journal article reports the family is believed to be still run by a ruling panel.

February 2016 - Capeci reports that Barney Bellomo is boss and is using captain Peter "Petey Red" DiChiara as acting/street boss to relay orders.
All roads lead to New York.
