Some of the younger members in Howard Beach and Middle Village are born to immigrants from Trapani and other parts of Sicily. It's looking like they're part of this "Sicilian faction" in NYC.TommyGambino wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 8:20 amPretty sure Capeci wrote not too long back that the Bonanmos still have a zip faction he said Vito Grimaldi is close to them.
Fasitta, Zummo, and Mule have all been captains/acting captains, and Vincenzo Masi's family is from Sicily as well, maybe Trapani as well, and he is close to Fasitta. Zummo's father was a Pizza Connection heroin trafficker who hung out with the Caffe Aiello crowd and an article said he was a Sicilian mafia member.
We know Nino Mistretta and Giovanni Carolla are Sicilians with ties to Castellammare who met with the leader(s) of the Castellammare mafia in recent years with approval of "Joe" (probably Cammarano Jr., which would make sense if his father-in-law Vito Grimaldi was close to this faction as Capeci said).
There are still the Navarra brothers, too, and one of them employs Sal Catalano's nephew in his legitimate business. The Navarras have close relatives who are/were made in both Castellammare and the US.
The Bonanno NYC Sicilian faction seemed to be all but gone after Sciascia was killed, the Ligammaris killed themselves, and Baldo Amato went away for life, so it was a surprise to me when Capeci first said Asaro and Grimaldi were respected figures with this mysterious "Sicilian faction," but a picture is starting to emerge.
When Sal Montagna was acting boss, there was a report that he and Anthony Pipitone were recruiting younger Sicilian members, so I wonder if some of the younger guys I mentioned were brought into the family by Montagna, or shortly thereafter. Now that we know Montagna's father was a man of honor in Castellammare and sponsored boss Francesco Domingo for membership, it makes sense if he was influential in re-establishing some kind of Sicilian group. His brother Franco's trip to Sicily in 2007 with Stefano Turricano is also of interest.
