Thanks for the reminder on this. It's the perfect Chicago story: McPier, snowplow contract kickbacks, and guys from Bridgeport.

I believe that the Dominick Gironda currently under Federal indictment for fraud is the son (maybe nephew) of LIUNA bigshot Nick Gironda. Nick Gironda's parents were Dominick Gironda and Angelina Bertucci. Angelina was, of course, the daughter of Chicago captain Bruno Roti Sr and his wife Marianna Bertucci, and a sister of Chicago LCN member Fred Roti, and thus Nick Gironda was also the nephew of captain Frank "Skids" Caruso and wife Catherine Roti, and first cousin of Frank "Toots" and Bruno Caruso. Nick Gironda was placed in mobbed-up LIUNA Local 1001 by Bruno Caruso and Accardo son-in-law Eric Kumerow, and succeeded Caruso in 2001 as head of the Local when the latter was removed from the position due to LCN ties. Local 1001, representing thousands of core employees of the Department of Streets and Sanitation of the City of Chicago, was for decades basically a personal fief of the Roti/Caruso clan.

I had mentioned just above that the Italian community of Chinatown/Armour Square/Bridgeport is characterized by very tightly knit families from a handful of towns, so this is a great example. The Girondas are paesani of the Roti, Bertucci, Spina, Andriacchi, Tassione, Nardi, et al families, all hailing from the small village of Simbario in the hills of the modern province of Vibo Valentia, Calabria (historically this was in Catanzaro province). While Nick Gironda's mother-in-law was a Bertucci, his mother, Maria Rosa Bertucci, was also. One of Nick Gironda's brothers, Joseph "DaDa" Gironda, married Theresa Bertucci, both of whose parents were Bertuccis lol. You see this with the Simbariani a lot, multiple generations of intermarriage and cousin marriages. They are basically all one huge clan. And despite having been entrenched as influential clout brokers in Chicago for over a century, these families maintained close ties to relatives back in Simbario. Unsurprisingly, in recent years, Bruno Caruso was President of the San Rocco di Simbario Society (founded in the early 20th century by his grandfather, Bruno Roti Sr), while Nick Gironda was Vice Pres:

Really? All the sources I have said he died in the 1990s. Curious if what you say is true. Anyone else have any info on him?
I could be wrong, but I thought that he died in 1997. The guy from this obituary was David Michael O’Malley, born 1948. Same age and had the same address in Burbank given by the Tribune in the 80s when O’Malley was pinched on burglary, extortion, and murder charges.

My source says he could be wrong but thought he lived in near Peoria - my source is not in touch with him but did note he resided in Burbank in the 80s. He was a well-known car thief, drug dealer and from what I gather had some involvement in several Outfit crews beyond working for Robert Salerno. His father was from Ireland. I'm certain this is his photo regardless.

Patrick I could be wrong - it's either a young photo or the wrong guy - but that would be the first wrong photo I've posted on this forum ;) The O'Malley photo was sent to me by someone whose sent quite a few great photos I've posted here. You seem to get upset when people question you - chill out. Not everyone is competing for the 'Street Guy of Chicago' award.

This should be a photo of O’Malley in 1964 at Bogan HS on the SW Side, just for reference:

I think I got a bad photo of O'Malley or its someone else entirely - the guy who sent it is pretty informed but I think its a mistake.

This photo however is verified and we were just discussing one of these guys - Michael Talerico and Jimmy LaPietra at ONIAC in the 1980s.

I’m definitely not upset and I’m definitely not competing for street guy of Chicago award. I’m not even saying the photo is not him. I was just posting a verified photo of O’Malley and asking if anyone saw a resemblance. I didn’t but I’m not expert on him. as i stated I heard he was dead but wasn’t even completely sure about that. I do think the obituary from 1997 that Tony posted was him. I have guys that were around him that told me he died in the 1990s but were unsure of the details.

No, no relation I think. Origins in both Taylor Street and Bridgeport. Related to Bruno Spina who was an Outfit guy, at least per family lore.

There is also a Jim Spina that owns Demitasse Cafe on Taylor street next to Mario’s. He’s a really good guy. He might be from Grand Ave which could make him related to Chris Spina.

I really need to take like a month, get an Air B&B and seriously experience Chicago. I lived there for 3 months in 2013~2014 but lived in Old Town the whole time and never really left Yuppie Land (one thing that really struck me at the time is that no one in that area seemed to speak with a Chciago accent, and when they did they actually lived in the suburbs). Visited a friend in Logan's Square for a week but it was already all hipster then. Some of the yuppie and hipster broads were hot though.

Bridgeport is interesting in that most people don’t leave Bridgeport, so you have people in their 30’s and 40’s who grew up in the neighborhood. More likely than not they’re usually living in the house they grew up in. Someone said that Bridgeport was insular and I agree to some extent, but, I disagree in that while the neighborhood has changed (more Asian and Hispanic) it hasn’t been gentrified nearly as bad as some of the other neighborhoods in Chicago. Bridgeport Italians are by and large Calabrians (or at least the ones I know and hang out at) and a lot of them came over in the second wave of Italian immigration to the US. You will definitely hear Chicago accents in Bridgeport. If you do stay at an Airbnb in Chicago I wouldn’t stay in Bridgeport, just my opinion.

I'd probably just use the place in Old Town as the base again. The landlord likes me. I call it the Yuppie Tower (because it's a tower full of yuppies), I never bothered to learn its real name. "Yuppie Tower" doesn't really narrow it down though, does it. There's also another place in Gold Coast run by a guy I know that I could stay at. The latter's location is so convenient that you could literally never leave like a two block radius from it for the rest of your life and still be perfectly fine.

Bridgeport would be kind of spooky for me to just live in for a month. Not sure if a lightweight like me could handle such a hood.

Not sure, but how is anyone going to be able to answer that question?
I've actually been warned of this by sources who share photos and intel with me on Chicago. The Chicago guys monitor their names on the internet and have their lawyers sue. I was told (and I was not a member) that on the original Real Deal forum, there was a Chicago Outfit guy whose name could not be typed as he had given Kenny several 'Cease and Desists' and was monitoring the forum. I tend to think the Joe Fosco saga kind of intensified this in Chicago - some of these guys are totally unknown to law enforcement or have been off the radar for several decades like Caruso, Ignoffo, etc.
I mean look at how many of these guys kids went into law. I believe the movie “Casino” specifically didn’t mention Chicago due to the litigious nature of Outfit guys.
