Visiting the West Side 1963

Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
Schipani's name is also seen often alongside Edward 'Eddie Buff' and Salvatore 'Sally Buff' Lanzieri, both soldiers under Skinny Sally Celembrino. If i'm not mistaken Celembrino's crew was based out of Staten Island and Brooklyn. Schipani was based in Brooklyn, maybe he was under Celembrino? Either way I don't see him being under Mike Coppolo
There was an FBI file in the Thomas Greco thread I think where in around 1966 where Toddo Marino was said to be under Joseph 'Joe Zotz' Lanza. This is interesting as it makes me wonder if Socks was a capo. There is a MF file where it states: "KONIGSBERG stated he recalled a "captain" in the GENOVESE "family", namely HARRY LANZA. Most people believe JOE "SOCKS" LANZA, a brother of HARRY, is the "captain", however, he is not.
This was in 1965 which is two years from 1963. The 1966 file about Toddo being under Joe Lanza and the 1965 file do seem to match, and I do think Marino was under Lanza. Furthermore, someone made a post (I think Chris or Pogo or HK) where they believed Marino succeeded Lanza as capodecina in the early 1970s, which makes me believe Marino was in his crew.
Carfagno's crew was based out of Brooklyn no? James Angellino was based out out of Westchester & The Bronx. I wonder if Harry Lanza succeeded Carfagno, the Pellegrino crew maybe split between Mogavero and Angellino, and Altomari maybe never being a capo?

Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
I had previously suggested that Angelina took over Carfano’s crew but that’s wrong. Carfano was based out of Brooklyn while Angelina and his crew were in Westchester-BX.
To add to the confusion, here’s a conversation from 1962 where Joseph “Joe Curly” Agone is said to be under Rocco Pellegrino AND that Saro Magovero was Pellegrino’s acting capo.
——————
As far as I know, the only source that actually named Jimmy Altomari as a captain was Al D’Arco recalling his youth.
The Pellegrino crew splitting between Mogavero and Angelina would make a lot of sense

Yeah, the FBI believed it to be Toriello who visited DeCarlo on an ongoing basis when he was in town. If I remember right there is an FBI report that says Toriello had flown into NYC from Florida short time before that meeting.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 6:20 pmchin_gigante wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 5:10 pm There's a guy called Fred who shows up on the DeCarlo tapes and talks about how he was made in 1916 or 1917. Someone mentioned that it was Alfred "Pogey" Toriello. I forgot who posted it.

Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
Definitely Genovese but it wouldn't surprise me if he was involved with them given all of the transfers in and out of both Families. "Fred" talked about being a member under Masseria so he would have had an insane number of connections if he was made in the mid-late 1910s and was around through everything back then.
Buffalo also had a member living in Boston who associated closely with the Patriarcas but belonged to the Utica crew.

Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
If "Fred" was Alfredo Toriello, I have him as born 1892 (don't know if his genealogy has been posted). His mother was named Giacinta and his father was Dionisio Torello, who I have as born about 1855, per his 1897 arrival in the US. This info matches an 1876 marriage record in Bonito, Avelino, for Dionisio Toriello and Giacinta Bortone, both born in Bonito. Bonito is in the Irpinia highlands of Avellino province, near Ariano Irpino (of Sopranos fame), where a lot of Avellines' who settled in the old 1st Ward in Newark came from.B. wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 10:59 pm Definitely Genovese but it wouldn't surprise me if he was involved with them given all of the transfers in and out of both Families. A brief note on the core peasani network that settled in Newark. Given the references here to comuni such as Ricigliano, Muro Lucano, and San Fele, we should expect that there were plenty of links between this community and Chicago in particular (as well as Brooklyn and New England, given the broader Avellines' diaspora):

That's very interesting, was just about to ask about his geneology. If it is the same guy then we can add him as another non-Sicilian inducted in the 1910sPolackTony wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 2:39 pm If "Fred" was Alfredo Toriello, I have him as born 1892 (don't know if his genealogy has been posted). Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
Yeah for the past few years I've been carrying him as one of the first known mainlanders made in NYC based on this. Frankie Yale was probably made by then as well.
Only discrepancy if I remember right is DeCarlo makes a reference to "Fred" being older circa 1916/1917 than Toriello was at the time but it's not Fred himself who says it and the age DeCarlo gives would have made Fred born in the 1870s or early 1880s which is unlikely. The FBI very well could have misheard the age he stated, too, but I need to review the transcript again. Plus as mentioned earlier Toriello was known to visit DeCarlo when he was in town and he happened to be visiting the area around this time.

Not to throw off the thread too much but how many mainlanders do we know of specifically being inducted throughout the US in the 1910s? Possibly Yale and Toriello. Joe Diamante is the only other one I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe Marco Reginelli, Dominick Festa, and John Scopoletti in Philly according to Rocco Scafidi (though Celeste Morello has them as being made later)

Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
With Esposito, he was identified by Gentile as made by around 1924 when Merlo died. Gentile of course doesn’t say when Esposito was inducted, but given that he was personally close to Tony D’Andrea, we can surmise that he was likely made sometime during the period when D’Andrea was boss (1914-1921). Gentile identified Yale as a capodecina in the Masseria Family, though again we don’t know exactly when he was made. Like Capone later, possible that Yale was made and given the rank of capodecina immediately thereafter (which would make sense in the case of a guy that was already “boss” of their own organization not yet formally under the mafia), though he could also have been inducted as a soldier and then moved up the ranks over some period of time. Not sure if there is anything firm enough to really pinpoint exactly when Yale was made.chin_gigante wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 4:22 pm Not to throw off the thread too much but how many mainlanders do we know of specifically being inducted throughout the US in the 1910s? Re: Visiting the West Side 1963
Mainlanders were brought into Pittsburgh by the late 1910s and the Gran Consiglio had to be involved in the process. No reason to think it happened before the 1910s at present except "Zu Vincenzo" teasing the Calabrian Comito with the prospect of being made, but there is evidence it was taking place by the end of the 1910s in Pittsburgh and NYC, with Chicago being highly probable as well. Like the Pittsburgh situation this was likely something that required national approval and would have been a mafia-wide rule change even though some Families chose to stay mostly or entirely Sicilian.

He was under Anthony Carillo
If this was Nicholas Galente aka "Nick O'Brien", he was likely under Frank Tieri
I don't think he was made at the time

Was Louis Gatto a member in 1963?
He was born in 1916; I think it’s likelier that he was made at ~40 than around ~60
