The whole 'Sicilian faction' thing is overblown imo. American born guys aren't seething because their boss was born in Sicily, there is no rivalry. They're all interconnected as you pointed out and to a much larger degree as a matter of fact. Cali is perfect example he was considered one of the top guys of the so called 'Sicilian faction' but he grew up in Bensonhurst and came up under Jackie D'Amico.

I guess that it's possible that he was going to be acting boss, replacing Junior. Scars probably, being close to Junior, was not aware of this, but heard the rumors.Wiseguy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 3:41 pm My original understanding was in line with what Capeci was saying, i.e. that Corozzo was set to replace Gotti Sr. as official boss before his indictment in 1996.
Obviously other sources seem to suggest it was for the acting boss position, i.e. to replace Gotti Jr. as acting boss.
I did a search and this is what Alite said in his book -
Just months after Gotti Sr.'s conviction, a plot to kill Gotti Jr. was planned by the imprisoned John Carneglia (who believed the Gotti's had robbed him of money owed to him on the street), Charles Carneglia, Nick Corozzo and Danny Marino. They approached Alite about helping set Junior up and, his relationship with Junior on the skids by then, he agreed. Alite said at one point Nick Corozzo decided to "trade bullets for dollars" by sending his nephew to visit Gotti Sr. in prison and deliver a message - "We can't protect Junior on the streets. He's got to slide over or he's going to be killed." Gotti Sr. got the message and worked out a deal where he funneled several hundred thousand dollars to Corozzo, thus ending Corozzo's involvement in the plot. Alite said Charles Carneglia "sold out for a lot less" when Carmine Agnello agreed to put him on the payroll of an auto salvage yard he owned. Later on, in 2006, there was supposedly another plot to kill Junior. The Gambinos believed he "had millions stashed away" and couldn't do a long prison stretch. In fact, they thought he may already be cooperating and didn't like how he had been acting and his claims of "leaving" the mob. Members of the "Howard Beach Crew" met with Sonny Franzese who gave his approval to have Junior killed.
The time line may be key here. Alite said above that it happened months after Gotti Sr's conviction in 1992. It wasn't until 1996 that Corozzo was supposedly set to replace Gotti Sr.

Disagree. You get a couple o zips fresh of the boat under lady liberty and contrast with a fifth gen 20 something ‘italian’ American, and they don’t even have grandma’s zitti in common. No diff? No such thing as zips? C’mon.johnny_scootch wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 5:45 pm

75% of ‘italian’ American kids these days can’t even speak the language. They’re going to eat at the same table as the 1st or 2nd gen? There’s no diff?

Also if you recall didonato said corozzo was planning to hit junior, when there’s smoke there’s fire. Most likely his periods of incarceration were the only things that stopped Nicky from making a power playWiseguy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 3:41 pm My original understanding was in line with what Capeci was saying, i.e. that Corozzo was set to replace Gotti Sr. as official boss before his indictment in 1996.

I disagree a bit with you statement. Sure some 5th generation 20 year old dipshit is not on the same level as a 1st or 2nd gen italian, but there are/were some 3rd and 4th generation guys who are much older that wouldn’t have taken no shit from zips and in a lot of cases the zips deferred to them. You gotta remember Italians started coming en masse since the 1880’s. An example would be Gotti who was 3rd generation himself, or Joey Merlino who I believe is a 4th gen Italian American.SonnyBlackstein wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 7:50 pmDisagree. Right. The zips are able to make a lot of money for the family through contacts in Italy.CabriniGreen wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2019 8:02 am To me, the Zip thing is about connections, not toughness....

Re: Nicky Corozzo
Sure but what I mean is that the zips will sit down to do business with the Americans if there is money to be made. Even in the past there have been zips with lots of respect for the Italian Americans. Italians have a secret admiration for Americans even though they act superior in front of them. Go to Italy and half the fucking kids have names like Brandon, or sylvan, and the movies and music that they watch and listen to most of it is American, culture is a joke in Italy now.SonnyBlackstein wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2019 8:41 amI’m not referring to toughness.
