First look at ‘Sopranos’ prequel…

I'll definitely give this a chance but I'll keep my expectations pretty low because I find that prequels usually are pretty disappointing. It's hard to tell stories I guess when you're so constrained by the original, not to mention the fact that they are usually blatant cash grabs. But hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised by this one. I just hope they don't shoehorn some woke bullshit into this like so much entertainment does these days.

I trust David Chase but I’m scared how this movie doesn’t have all Italian-American actors from NJ and NY like the series did, that really scares me.

The series was so authentic in terms of being an Italian-American in Jersey during that exact time period of 1999-2007.

I have had the same concern, that was a big part of what made the series so effective IMO as well.

Incidentally, before the whole Covid thing hit I took an Uber out in Union, NJ and the driver was a local who mentioned that he had a bit part in the movie where he played an “Italian racist”, part of the riot scene I guess. But some of the major characters aren’t played by tristate Italians so I remain wary.

I think Vera Farmiga who plays Livia Soprano is the only one in the movie actually from Jersey and she’s Ukrainian. This all just scares me a lot about the movie, but I really trust David Chase.

Perfect example of just how authentic The Sopranos series really was, Tony’s Goomar Irina was played by an actress actually from Ukraine who was really only 23 years old at the time. Authenticity folks!

Im good with chase not using all Italians since Bernthal and corey stoll playing Junior are good actors…but imo the reason the Sopranos is the best show ever is not just the drama and acting, but its legitc hilarious without it being a comedy similar to Goodfellas….the movie has to have that aspect to be great i think

Meadow and AJ weren't played by Italians either. Don't forget that Richia Aprile was also played by a Jew and that was probsbly the most accurate protrayal of a wiseguy on that show.

All good points. David Proval and Nancy Marchand both gave outstanding performances. Hard to imagine a young Paulie played by a non-Italian, but even if they got an Ital-American kid I guess they don’t make em like Junior Sirico anymore anyways, so how knows how much of a difference it will really make.

I thought this as well or maybe another DiMeo family member we never saw. Definitely seemed like the guy was an authority figure in Dickie's life so a father seems possible too

Believe it or not I've never actually watched the Sopranos, other than some clips here and there, but I intend to. But other stuff keeps getting in the way.

I think I'll watch this origin story first and then watch the series, maybe.

Wow. It's really the only other thing on par with the Godfather movies, Goodfellas and Casino.

It's because it's a TV show and I don't have the attention span to invest in something that's like 100 hours long total. So I never watch TV. I never read novels either. Last TV show ever watched was Law & Order when Orbach was on. I prefer the little self-contained stories you get in movies. But I might make an exception for The Sopranos.
