I still say Corozzo and DiMaria were never acting boss and underboss.

I don't believe Corozzo ever had the title of acting boss, but was s member of a ruling panel in the 1990s.
His brother was the consilieri. Thats usually a sign as to what the official unofficial pecking order is. John Gambino wasnt acting boss neither when he was breathing. But you know.

Lots of evidence to suggest JG was the power prior to his death.
You have evidence to suggest otherwise?
Evidence to suggest he was'nt the guy while he was breathing or that he was the guy? My post is stating jg was and that the little guy was posibly a defacto guy without an admin title on account a his brother would a never been the official if the little guy was'nt being respected and thought of by the power base. With Mickey boy as the official consilieri of the gambino family the generation of the corozzos, gottis, marinos, lombardozis, etceteras, are represented. It aint just a zip show.

I know LE doesn't want Peter Gotti let out under compassionate release, but has the judge ruled yet? I haven't seen anything that says Gotti has stepped down or was taken down as boss yet or if what he did was now considered a normal ploy to gain freedom.

I belive he was, with his brother Jojo(consigliere) and Lenny Dimaria(Underboss).Interesting fact is that all 3 of those guys are free now.Dont sure who is still at street.
I don't recall what exactly Corozzo was indicted as back in 1996. If he was the acting boss at that point or just on the panel, which could be argued is a group of acting bosses.

One article, which I'd recommend taking loosely since many journalists are lazy and throw terms around freely, said he was set to replace Gotti Jr. as acting boss. Other articles said he was set to replace Gotti Sr. himself as the boss before he was indicted.

Alite said in his book that Corozzo sent Gotti a message in prison basically saying that Junior needed to step aside. That they "couldn't protect him" otherwise. Essentially a thinly veiled threat.

I don't recall DiMaria ever being underboss.

Nicky Corozzo, the man who was to become the new Gambino godfather, waded out of the Atlantic Ocean about noon Wednesday and sat on a chair on the Key Biscayne sand.

There, he commented to the man who had accompanied him into the surf how beautiful the ocean felt.

By the time the warm breeze had dried Corozzo, 56, and his friend, Ralph "Fly" Davino Jr., 53, both wore handcuffs - courtesy of the 20-plus FBI agents who had been watching them since they checked into the $350-per-room Sonesta Beach Resort six days ago.

"It was an easy arrest," said FBI Special Agent Hardrick Crawford said in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday. "They obviously weren't carrying guns."

Agents draped towels over the men's handcuffed wrists and discreetly walked them past other sunbathers and stuffed them into waiting cars. Still wearing their swimming trunks, the men were driven to the Miami offices of the FBI, where they were formally charged with conspiracy to commit murder, arson, extortion, interstate transportation of stolen property, interstate travel in aid of racketeering, and retaliation against a witness for testifying at an official proceeding.

The vacationing suspects are accused of running from their Brooklyn base a Gambino crew in South Florida. They received proceeds from loansharking and the sale of stolen property in South Florida, agents said.

If he had not been arrested, mob observers said, Corozzo, nicknamed "The Little Guy," soon would have been elected head of the New York crime family once lead by John Gotti, who is serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary. Gotti's son, John Gotti Jr., is the acting boss.

"He would have probably replaced Junior," said James Fox, the former New York FBI director who led the investigation that eventually put Gotti Sr. behind bars. "The old-timers in the family are tired of Junior's antics, including the fact he loves publicity."

Not many important mob figures have been arrested here.

"It is very rare for a major player to be arrested in South Florida," said Tom Cash, managing director at the Kroll Associates security consulting firm. Cash spent 30 years as a Drug Enforcement Administration agent and eight years at the head of the Miami bureau. "This is not a normal arrest. Corozzo operates in the big leagues."

Seven other alleged Gambino members were named in the 20-count, 39-page indictment unsealed on Wednesday at the U.S. Attorney's Southern District of Florida office in Fort Lauderdale.

Sydney Alwais, no age listed, and his son, David Alwais, no age available, walked in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Fort Lauderdale and were arrested. Since 1992, agents said, the two men ran a loansharking business in Deerfield Beach with interest rates between 2 and 5 percent a week, or 104 to 260 percent a year.

Federal investigators said they also fenced stolen property out of their check cashing store, EZ Check Cashing at 141 E. Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach.

Sydney Alwais and another suspected Gambino member, Robert Engel, who was still sought by the FBI Wednesday night, also are charged with threatening to burn down a Boynton Beach print shop, Clear Copy at 211 S. Federal Highway.

Others indicted included alleged high-ranking Gambino captain Lenny DiMaria, 55, nabbed in New York on Wednesday; Anthony Ruggiano Jr., 53, who already is serving time in a New York jail; Salvatore Pecchio, who is still being sought; and David Furman, an employee at EZ Check Cashing, who was arrested on Wednesday in Deerfield Beach.

Agent Tami Jo Kayworth testified that on Apr. 9, 1996 she was monitoring a conversation Corozzo was having in a Ft. Lauderdale hotel with a cooperating witness and heard Corozzo explain how he was picked to succeed Gotti with help from the Dapper Don's brothers, Gene and Peter.

"Corozzo describes how he originally was put up to be the Gambino boss to take over after John Gotti by the family capos," said Kayworth, reading from a report prepared from her notes and a follow-up interview with the witness. I see what the sicilians get out of it. But what does the New York part of the Gambinos get out of the sicilians being in charge, beyond steady, stable leadership?

It's a riddle to me...... I know its bothered Frank too, he asked a couple times, " Why the Great Lorenzo Mannino for under"? ( I'm paraphrasing you... Frank)

One things for sure, the Gambinos got a lot of Old school guys back in the fold, their leadership should be pretty solid now....
IMO I think the rest of the family is being provided with Major drug/Narcotics shipments to be trafficked thru proxies, Gangs/Gang members of all kinds and are operating on high level with Public Corruption and Corrupt officials including Rogue LE providing them Leaked information of ongoing probes and people that different agencies might possibly be looking into . Something really stinks in Queens and S.I.. That's just my take and opinion as there are lots of rumors regarding this type of stuff going on. The Sicilians are very clannish and to install Paradiso wasn't odd but a lil surprising given his Ties to and Drug trafficking abilities going back decades

If this was the case, what about the other incarcerated bosses in NY at the time. All we know is it didn't happen, and they could of found another candidate to replace Corozzo. Maybe John Gotti never agreed to step down in the first place, or Corozzo says he doesn't know if he wants the job.

My original understanding was in line with what Capeci was saying, i.e. that Corozzo was set to replace Gotti Sr. as official boss before his indictment in 1996.

Obviously other sources seem to suggest it was for the acting boss position, i.e. to replace Gotti Jr. as acting boss.

I did a search and this is what Alite said in his book -

Just months after Gotti Sr.'s conviction, a plot to kill Gotti Jr. was planned by the imprisoned John Carneglia (who believed the Gotti's had robbed him of money owed to him on the street), Charles Carneglia, Nick Corozzo and Danny Marino. They approached Alite about helping set Junior up and, his relationship with Junior on the skids by then, he agreed. Alite said at one point Nick Corozzo decided to "trade bullets for dollars" by sending his nephew to visit Gotti Sr. in prison and deliver a message - "We can't protect Junior on the streets. He's got to slide over or he's going to be killed." Gotti Sr. got the message and worked out a deal where he funneled several hundred thousand dollars to Corozzo, thus ending Corozzo's involvement in the plot. Alite said Charles Carneglia "sold out for a lot less" when Carmine Agnello agreed to put him on the payroll of an auto salvage yard he owned. Later on, in 2006, there was supposedly another plot to kill Junior. The Gambinos believed he "had millions stashed away" and couldn't do a long prison stretch. In fact, they thought he may already be cooperating and didn't like how he had been acting and his claims of "leaving" the mob. Members of the "Howard Beach Crew" met with Sonny Franzese who gave his approval to have Junior killed.

The time line may be key here. Alite said above that it happened months after Gotti Sr's conviction in 1992. It wasn't until 1996 that Corozzo was supposedly set to replace Gotti Sr.
All roads lead to New York.
