Re: The 'Ndrangheta in Ontario
Why is he testifying? You think anyone tried to stop him or talk him out of it?
Re: The 'Ndrangheta in Ontario
Are you referring to the police agent or Ursino?CabriniGreen wrote: ↑Wed Apr 18, 2018 6:32 pm Why is he testifying? You think anyone tried to stop him or talk him out of it?

@antimafia
Ursino..... it seemed like the New Bridge guys took a fall for the leaders. Here is one of the leaders speaking in open court. It seems like the other bosses woulda tried to talk him out of it..

Re: The 'Ndrangheta in Ontario
There are publication restrictions for this trial--generally, journalists covering such a trial will report only on what is said in the courtroom when the jury was present but are prevented from reporting what was said when the jury was absent. Any other members of the public like me can listen, take notes, and request a CliffsNotes version of court transcripts; therefore, I will just give my general impressions about what I've seen and heard that are not in violation of the restrictions.CabriniGreen wrote: ↑Thu Apr 19, 2018 9:38 pm @antimafia

I have not been in the courtroom since Ursino started testifying this past Tuesday. I have seen him many times in the past few weeks, including in other places inside the courthouse and outside. Keep in mind that he is out on bail. He made a wise choice in criminal lawyer Dragi Zekavica. Zekavica has been blind for close to 43 years; he elicits sympathy from everyone in the courtroom. He is very effective.
One criminal lawyer representing Cosmin Dracea--Ursino's co-accused--is Kathryn Wells (Dracea has two lawyers representing him). She is also highly competent. She had a chance to examine Ursino the other day, and in Peter Edwards's corresponding article, he briefly mentioned her question to Ursino and Ursino's answer. She knows what she's doing. Read about the testimony that has been reported on and you'll see the disconnect between Ursino as a powerful 'ndrangheta boss and Ursino as a brokester who, for example, asked for a $100 loan from the undercover police agent.
The Project OPhonenix investigation that led to the charges in June 2015 against Ursino and Dracea, as well as numerous others (notably Diego Serrano), revealed that, in addition to the existence of a drug-trafficking ring that was ostensibly headed by 'ndrangheta figures like Ursino and the murdered Carmine Verduci (killed in April 2014, he would have been charged had he lived), violence was used to resolve dissent.
The Greater Toronto Area Siderno Group does not act as one man, and especially has not since a schism that dates back to August 2008. When the local camera di controllo cannot resolve disputes, the camera di controllo in Calabria gets involved. The problem is, the latter has not been successful either. Despite my avid interest in and research about this particular 'ndrangheta group, I am also trying to demystify the mystique. Some of the testimony in this cocaine-trafficking trial has revealed new details about Siderno Group-related murders going back more than 20 years, as well as some (but not all) of the murders in the last five (Verduci, Sam Calautti)--seems as though these two could have been killed for reasons having nothing to do with the Montreal mob war, which of course leads to the possible conclusion that the 'ndrangheta in the GTA had no designs on taking over the Montreal Mafia. Which is what the RCMP says.

Great book. Have you read Mafia Republic by John Dickie?UTC wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 11:24 pm It's Evil Life by Clive small and Tom Gilling. And here is an article in today's Daily Mail about their huge presence in Australia:
