Thousands of ammunition rounds found in reputed mobster's home
A reputed mobster got an early-morning visit from NYPD detectives who searched his home and found guns hidden in socks, tons of cash and thousands of live ammunition rounds, prosecutors allege.
NYPD Det. Gilberto Vazquez outlined the items recovered in the search of alleged Bonanno associate Nicholas Bernhard's Rockland County home and his connection to the four defendants during his testimony in the Bonanno mob family trial Wednesday in Manhattan Supreme Court.
The alleged Bonanno crime family members – Anthony "Skinny" Santoro, 52, of Great Kills, Nicholas Santora, 73, Vito Badamo and Ernest Aiello, 36 - are charged with enterprise corruption, including extortion, gambling, drug dealing and loansharking.
The state claims Santora is the crime family's ringleader, and he was in charge of an Internet gambling site, sold prescription drugs, such as oxycodone and Viagra, on the black market, and the other three defendants were his underlings.

'Skinny' Santoro was a broke hustler, not a mobster, defense lawyer says
Anthony (Skinny) Santoro, his lawyer claims, was a broke hustler, and not the violent, money-making mobster the state has portrayed.
The Great Kills man undertook various failed business ventures, but none of them were used to benefit the Bonanno crime family, said his defense attorney, Adam Konta, during his summation Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Santoro, 52, and his co-defendants -- Nicholas Santora, 73, Vito Badamo, 53, and Ernest Aiello, 36 -- are on trial for enterprise corruption, including loansharking, gambling and drug dealing after authorities say they busted a nine-man Bonanno crew in July 2013.

I guess it's looking good for these guys if the jury is still out.
The jury in the Bonanno mob trial did not reach a verdict Thursday, and deliberations were adjourned to May 2.

The skinny on 'Skinny' -- A look at man at center of the Bonanno mob trial
On one side, prosecutors say he's a violent Bonanno mob enforcer caught on wiretap threatening people with hatchets and bullets.
His close ones, however, describe a good-hearted, incredibly funny man with a soft side and bit of a loose tongue -- or, how he more aptly puts it, a rough and tough cream puff.
Anthony (Skinny) Santoro, 52, of Great Kills, has been portrayed with these conflicting — yet fascinating — personalities during his nearly three-month trial in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.
So, who's the real "Skinny?"

Still no verdict in Bonanno mob trial; deliberations resume Wednesday
After four days of deliberations, the jury in the trial of four Bonanno mob suspects did not reach a verdict Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the jurors asked for several pieces of evidence. They requested to see all the photos from the trial, the vouchers from all the executed search warrants, and asked to hear calls involving Badamo, Santoro, and Nicholas Bernhard, one of the other five co-defendants who pleaded guilty.
The panel also heard a car-bug call between Badamo and alleged Bonanno boss Santora. They also wanted to see the phone books and vouchers from Santora's home search.
They then asked for a read back of James "Louie" Tartaglione's entire testimony on Wednesday morning. Tartaglione, the state's key witness against the defendants, is a former Bonanno capo turned snitch who testified how he knew Santora and Badamo from their time in the Bonanno family.

Jury in Bonanno mob trial asks for advice to avoid hung jury
The jury in the Bonanno mob trial asked the judge for advice on how they can resolve their disagreements in order to avoid a hung jury.
The panel, which was in its fifth day of deliberations Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, was having difficulty agreeing on the enterprise corruption charge, the top count against the four defendants.
Justice Mark Dwyer, however, implored them to keep deliberating while reminding them of their responsibilities as jurors.
"I'm bound by law to hold you for a reasonable time to reach a verdict," Dwyer said. "I know this is a complex count you're considering."

I exchanged a couple of emails with Mira Wassef who has been covering it from the courtroom and she reported that the jurors are having a hard time figuring out what enterprise corruption is and the prosecutors did not do a good job of dumbing it down for the jurors. Her take was likely a hung jury as a result.
