There should definitely be a sequel to this to show the rest of the characters integrating in the Life.

Disappointing. They did too much and accomplished too little. Too many characters. Too many scenes. Too slow and not enough flow. Should have focused on developing fewer characters. Some pf the characters they did develop played to little role in the in understanding what made Tony and Dicky tick. First 20-30 minutes could have way too slow and could have accomplished the same thin in half the time.

I think I would have liked them to focus on teenage Tony and his integration onto the line life with the Dicky story much shorter to set the stage.Nick Prango wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 5:18 pm There should definitely be a sequel to this to show the rest of the characters integrating in the Life.
Re: First look at ‘Sopranos’ prequel…
I thought the whole Black vs Italian thing pretty cringe. Like they could’ve worked the whole movie literally without this plot line. Like it doesn’t even matter considering who kills Dickie
Re: First look at ‘Sopranos’ prequel…
This garbage movie is to The Sopranos what Godfather 3 is to The Godfather. I’m going to pretend it doesn’t exist.

I agree. The black characters subplot was completely unnecessary. What the hell is Frank Lucas doing in the film? why does over half a movie about the ITALIAN Mafia, have to be about the struggles, and empowerment of black culture? Can no other culture just tell their own story fully? It really ruined this as a Sopranos Story. Fucking wokeness ruined good entertainment. If I have to see another film with a "woke" message added in I'm gonna puke.

The whole movie just feels like Part 1 wait for the sequel.NickleCity wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 7:27 pmI think I would have liked them to focus on teenage Tony and his integration onto the line life with the Dicky story much shorter to set the stage.Nick Prango wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 5:18 pm There should definitely be a sequel to this to show the rest of the characters integrating in the Life.

Very disappointing. Looked more like a movie making fun of the sopranos. I would of just watched a couple sopranos episodes than watch that shit

Re: First look at ‘Sopranos’ prequel…
David Chase had long wanted to make a movie about the 1967 Newark riots and could never get it off the ground. By implementing The Sopranos universe that was what allowed him to make the film.
I gave this film a few watches, first as part of The Sopranos universe and then second as its own independent film. As an independent film much of it is irrelevant. I do not consider it a bad film, however if you never watch The Sopranos and were to watch this film, you would find it to be a complete waste of time.

Re: First look at ‘Sopranos’ prequel…
Damn I see the movie really isn't getting a lot of love...lmao. I understand the complaints. I still stand by my love for it because I'm just so blinded by fandom and excited for new material. Plus going to the actual premier was a cool experience. I had low expectations too - so I'm happy I walked away thinking that at the very least, this whole thing didn't FEEL like a thrown-together money grab, at least.
I'd also agree with the woke sentiments only if it weren't for Newark and the late 60s (riots, unrest, civil rights, etc.) actually being a part of Chase's original plans, always being something of interest to Chase, and also actually being a part of Tony's childhood on the show.
I can see how it'd be easy to think - just with what's going on right now with all of the forced inclusion and corporate/media co-opting - that the "black" part of this story line was just crowbarred into this movie to check some boxes that need to be checked today - but like another poster said above, the riots have been something Chase has wanted to do something with forever - and again, it was a part of Tony's childhood on the show. Just feels like good timing to touch on that right now, but I think it's coincidental. I don't think they were consciously thinking about "equity and inclusion"
I want to believe there's going to be a sequel that addresses/cleans up the situation with the blacks , picking up where this movie left off. I also want to believe that on the series, Tony never talked about a big black vs. italian war over the numbers rackets back in the day only because he was too young to know what was going on, and was ultimately this little war was just a blip on the radar of his father's extensive Mob career. Another day in the life. Maybe I'm thinking about it too much and giving Chase and everybody else way too much credit though LOL.
Anyway, so we all know that Barry Haydu was bullshit. Now though... was that the story Tony was told growing up? OR was that what he told Chris at that particular time to get Chris to do what he did? Even when Season 4 was airing ...shit...over 15 or 16 years ago...I thought Tony was shining Chris on about Barry Haydu . But, now I'm thinking maybe that's the story Tony was told growing up, too? He was so worked up in Melfi's office about the blacks that jumped him and tried to steal his shoes (the ones who prevented him from going on the hijacking with Tony B) but never has any animosity for the ones that killed his Uncle and tried to kill his Dad?

It's everywhere today. The wonder years remake of a black family, the super bowl halftime performers. snoop dog, dr. dre, etc. This hip hop queens show coming out on tv. The so called black national anthem at every nfl game. It is no coincidence. You think they would green light an all white sitcom in today's climate?

I hear ya, but I don't think Chase et. al. had all of that in mind when making this movie - versus the larger media corporations who are responsible for everything else you mentioned above.MichaelGiovanni wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 1:23 pmgood post. the only thing i'll disagree with and this is just my opinion is "Just feels like good timing to touch on that right now, but I think it's coincidental. The best part about it, especially with things like the black Wonder Years reboot, is nobody who I know who is black actually likes or wants this stuff. I know that's anecdotal - talking about a small 'sample' group from a handful of black friends I have - but they, just like me, feel like it's a cheap cop out. Just a "oh, we gave you guys the Wonder Years... here you go... now shut up" type of thing. It's lazy and transparent. Similar to throwing a female into the James Bond role; why not just spend the time and energy on making a different, new unique story with a strong female lead? Make a new female icon that could potentially turn into a franchise that rivals James Bond. No, instead they'll just wedge a female, or a black person, or whatever, into these already existing storylines/universes. That's the best part about this corporate driven forced inclusion - it's lazy, half hearted, and completely misses the mark. It's going to backfire on them - I don't know anybody who is impressed by any of this stuff. When black people talk about wanting a seat at the table... or representation, I don't think they're talking about Kevin from The Wonder Years needing an afro, or having a Slavery-porn movie made every year and fasttracked through the Oscars, or having the topic of race wedged into every aspect of entertainment. The people behind this shit are completely missing it - it's not doing what they think, and it's driving literally all demographics away, albeit all for different reasons.
