Me? I was a nobody. Just a young punk with a small book that was dumb enough to get involved with selling drugs. My uncle was one of Osticco’s best friends, my grandmother had a restaurant in Hazleton and Scalleat and his guys ate breakfast there almost daily so he became tight with my Pop. I grew up hanging out in the back room of Rinaldi’s playing pinball while the wiseguy’s played cards. I got a job at Valenti’s scrapyard when I was 16 and it’s been owned by Bufalino family guys for ages. My brother ended up marrying a girl who was the best man at Bufalino’s wedding and partners with him in a trucking company and upscale (for that era) development. Those guys were just always around. When school was in and my brothers and I started playing sports and getting noticed they were the first guys to tell us to “stay out of the shit”. Years later when I got popped by the DEA for selling coke my uncle just about disowned me. I learned how to use one of those big ass art table things with the knife in the middle to cut up his football tickets when I was like 10. He told me that when I get out of prison if I ever sold drugs again he was going to chop my head off with one. He died while I was in Fairton, the day after I received my divorce papers.

Scorsese's movies are going higher up the hierarchy.

Mean Streets - street associates, dime rackets

Raging Bull - prize fighter taking a dive to get title shot

Goodfellas - street associates that committed the Lufthansa heist.

Casino - Vegas casino manager

The Departed - Boston Irish boss with an FBI agent working for him

The Irishman - button man (ostensibly) for Jimmy Hoffa and Russell Buffalino
Glick told author Nicholas Pileggi that he expected to meet a banker-type individual, but instead, he found Alvin Baron to be a gruff, tough-talking cigar-chomping Teamster who greeted him with, “What the fuck do you want?”

Correction: In The Departed, Whitey Bulger surrogate "Frank Costello" feeds the FBI information, where as John Connolly's surrogate, "Colin Sullivan" is a faaakin' statey.

Casino was the pinnacle of their canonical mob carreer. Sam Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santora own all the other characters. Nicky controlled all of Vegas' rackets while Sam just needed to make a phone call to Chicago to get things done. Nicky would've told Bufalino and Sheeran to go fuck themselves and if they tried to move in he would put Sheeran's head into a vice just like he did with the other Irish prick. He would also shock and awe Frank Costello in his kitchen before the FBI would've a clue what happened. Finally he would summon Bufalino and politely ask his money back or else explain him what it is that he does. Sam in turn also had a superior wardrobe compared to everyone else, and he had a wife who looked like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct.

100% the truth too. That’s the crazy part. You can’t make this shit up if you wanted too. I definitely grew up a little different then most kids.

Bulger had a freakin' FBI agent. An FBI agent. Taking orders from him. Clearing the Anguelos out of the Boston rackets. Now in the movie Costello's guy was a state trooper but still.

Spilotro/Santoro was rubbed out for doing a lot less than taking out someone who's vouched for by someone like Buffalino.

Sam's knee high blue socks were just classy see what DeNiro's rocking in The Irishman.

The more stuff I read the more I think Sheeran might not be full of shit. Too many links and too many rats/eyewitness regarding Gallo disrespecting Bufalino and Sheeran being the shooter. Say what you want about Brandt but the guy was a respected member of law enforcement with no reason to lie. The only people calling him a blatant liar are a few jealous journalists who would give their left nut to have Scorsese make a film about their books. Too many FBI reports dated 20 years before the book came out linked him to both the Gallo and Hoffa murders. Bufalino was also linked to the JFK, Gallo, Columbo, and Hoffa murders.

For 40 years the feds and police, plus informers all sad it was Sonny Pinto, including one who was with them when they killed Gallo and turned himself in.
One Scorsese movie changes all that. From now on the story will be that it was Sheeran.

Nepa, next thing they’ll say he started the Great Chicago Fire!
-
Sheeran is full of BS in my humble opinion. Yes he was close to Bufalino and used by him over the years.
-
But he had nothing to do with the Joe Gallo hit! (with 100+ shooters, do you really think the Colombo’s need to import talent?), and even with Hoffa, Detroit and the Giacalone’s had more than enough “capable” shooters and it was such a sensitive important job, that I imagine that Zerilli and the Genovese hierarchy used “tested, very close and trusted” guys for this! ...... this was a “National” problem and a top, top Commission decision to hit Hoffa!
-
IMO they’re NOT using an Irishman, and if they did, they’d have made sure to clip him too right afterwards!
-
Swore, inducted top veteran “good fellows” for this type of thing!

Brandt wanted to sell books and Sheeran was hoping to leave his daughters some money. You think that Sheeran could be the forest gump of organized crime but slip under the national radar as even a remote suspect in the Gallo shooting and not even the fringe of the JFK case, yet be involved in both? I'll give him the chance he was involved with Hoffa but that's it.

dack2001 wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2019 7:44 am Excellent article on why the Irishman was full of shit. If he was such an effective secret killer why wasn’t he using another drunk named Charlie Allen (Palermo) to do hits for Russell Bufalino in the late 70's? From Sheeran's perspective, better to give your daughters something than to die a broke ex-con in a nursing home without a penny to your name. Should be a good movie though.

I read the book while traveling and going in I was totally ignorant of Sheerhan’s history of less than honest story telling or anything about the author (Brandt). The thing that became apparent pretty quickly was 1) Brandt’s writing left a lot to be desired. It was fairly poorly written/obvious that this wasn’t his chosen profession. This in itself isn’t necessarily bad for some nonfiction but It felt a little like a kid writing a book report on a subject he’s really excited about. 2) sources, essentially there none. when he did actually quote a 3rd party that could bring credence to his Sheerhan’s point, it would be a very short remark that didn’t include a ton of details and would be easy to use out of context.

It reminded me a little of reading Phillip Carlo’s ‘Iceman’. Very sensational, little substance. I was surprised such heavy hitters were signed on for ‘the irishman’ because it’s a long way from Pillegi and ‘Wiseguy’. Just my 2 cents.
