LOL, shit. I got back from the gym and just started looking up Madison and unbeknownst to me Tony was doing the same thing. Looking over everything, we pretty much found the same thing. Kudos on finding Aiello's parents and I was wondering the same thing about Vincenzo Caruso re. Torretta.

Last name left is Candella, there's several people who could fit the bill.

Should be noted that Vincenzo Troia was also from Palermo City. When his father Settimo Troia arrived in NYC in 930 bound for Madison, he gave his brother Paolo in Passo di Rigano as his contact back home. So we see a defnitie trend, alongside the Bagheresi, of Palermitani connected to hardcore Palermo/Conca D'Oro mafia strongholds (Uditore, Passo di Rigano, Torretta).

Troia's wife Ninfa was born in 1904 in San Giuseppe Jato to Salvatore Mandarino and Teresa Reda. She arrived in NYC in 1921 bound for Madison where her brother Domenico Mandarino was already living, and married Troia in 1924 in Madison. In 1930, Vincenzo and Ninfa lived in St paul, MN, but had returned to Madison by around 1935. Now, we've seen St Paul come up already in this thread several times connected to these Madison people. The connections between the Madison outfit and Chicago, Rockford, and Milwaukee are expected and obvious. I think there's good grounds now to think about investigating mafia links to St Paul. We know that the Twin Cities seem to have had a significant Calabrese community, but there's got to be more to these Palermitani in Madison and Chicago having apparent links to St Paul, IMO.

I'm assuming that the Madison member was the Filippo Candela who is credited with founding the infamous Grande Cheese Co in fond du Lac in 1941. That was the guy who was born 1891 in Montelepre, though I haven't been able to confirm his parents (the birth records for Montelepre for that year are not available online). His wife, however, was Providenza DiBella of Montelepre, and she was the sister of Bonanno member Giovanni Vincenzo "John" DiBella.

Considering the very strong links between Grande Cheese and events in Chicago in the '40s, worth noting that there were also Candelas from Montelepre in both Chicago and Gary, though I'm not yet sure if there were direct relations to Filippo Candela.

I take it that even though Madison is in WI, they answered to Chicago? Seeing so many mentions of Chicago in this thread makes me assume so.

With the name Reda bouncing around it makes me wonder if Gaetano "Tom" Reda, a casualty of the Rockford bootlegging war, was from Madison. Not only because that's a name found in SGI but because former Madisonite Tony LoMonaco, who relocated to Rockford and was an LCN power there, married a Giuseppa Reda in San Giuseppe Iato. Word is that while LoMonaco was in prison around October 1924, Giuseppa and one of their children were in a car on the way to visit LoMonaco and she crashed the car killing both her and the child. Now, I haven't found the article relating to this, nor have I found her parents or if she connects to Gaetano Reda, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a familial connection.

Chicago was the avugad (Commission rep) for Madison, Rockford, Milwaukee, Springfield, KC (at various points also STL, Detroit, and LA). Plus the Families in all of these towns had personal ties to each other, from people moving between different cities and having paesani/kin in common.

Not just 100% Sicilian, 100% Palermitano. This was what I had guessed already but it’s great to actually lay it out.

John Candela who is the son of Filippo is still alive and owns Grande Cheese. There have been FBI files on him that have listed him as a possible made member. So there is a possibility that there is still a member of Madison still alive

Yes, if I remember correctly he was made around 1967 or so which would make him the last man standing. Being born in 1944 that would make him pretty young to be made and perhaps an effort on Madison's part not to die out.

But then when Madison disbanded the remaining members were assigned to either Milwaukee or Chicago, IIRC. Don’t recall if Maniaci specified who, if anyone, John Candela reported to at that point?

I think if I remember correctly he was assigned to Milwaukee bc I believe he is one of two made members from Milwaukee still alive, the other being John Balistrieri

I should say too that the owner of Bee's Tavern at the time was James Schiavo and his son Anthony.

Yep, definitely a possibility. That fact that he was under 30 seems it very likely he was one of the two that voted to keep the family going. Curious on who the other possible member that voted to keep the family alive.
