Casino is probably Scorsese's most underrated and unheralded picture. Casino is just so colorful, multi-layered and intricate despite it's apparent simplicity. The film has three different characters narrating the story but none of it feels like exposition and it's never over-bearing.

Il Traditore was awful to me; not even a gangster movie. I'd say Mean Streets and Goodfellas.

In terms of faithfulness I definitely would pick an Italian picture any time before an American mob movie. I would say the 2008 Gomorrah film is the cruelest, most realistic mafia movie that was ever made. Gomorrah series is a masterpiece but its dramatization of the plot makes it less believable than the film.

The rest of it is excellent in terms of little details that feel true to life. Goodfellas too, though Goodfellas seriously prettied up the Burke crew and made the whole story look much more glamorous than it really was (no one would sit through a truly realistic Henry Hill movie LOL.)
Nick Pileggi was married to legendary screenwriter Nora Ephron for like 20 years and she actually wrote a screenplay about Henry Hill and his life before Pileggi wrote Wiseguy. They legit knew Henry. It had a less serious and more comical tone, but the story arch was similar—Henry Hill and his mob buddies getting in and out of trouble.

Sean Fennessy is a movie critic that writes for the Ringer, and he does a really popular podcast with Bill Simmons called the Rewatchables. On their Goodfellas episode, he talks about how his dad was a Suffolk County narcotics detective that helped arrest Hill on a couple occasions. He talks about how he and the folks in his neighborhood were well aware of Henry Hill long before Goodfellas ever came out. It’s a great listen if you get a chance (the whole podcast series is great to be honest).

I’d like to see a movie based on the mafia from 2000 till now. I want to see the current landscape portrayed on screen. Not the glory days shit.

Unless it is about the Calabrians (I thought ZeroZeroZero was awesome). Or the happenings in Canada.

There are a lot of good films about Ndrangheta and Camorra set in Italy, but none of them are popular in the English world I think because American audiences just don`t like the rawness of Italian mob films. However Canada definitely has a lot of potentials. Mafia Inc is in general a good film about the Rizzutos.

Just think of two another good movie :

-I Guappi starring Franco Nero, Fabio Testi & Claudia Cardinale
-Il Prefetto di Ferro starring Giuliano Gemma & Claudia Cardinale. This one is based on Cesare Mori

Both directed by Pasquale Squitierri, one of the luckiest man of the world since he was married to Claudia Cardinale ^^
