Author John Dickie has a good Twitter thread about Cutolo.

Most of the tweets below are found at https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1362 ... 1613668679. I added a few tweets at the very end of my post, as they aren't found at the aforementioned link.

Raffaele Cutolo has died. He tried to unite the vast and chaotic Neapolitan underworld in his Nuova Camorra Organizzata (NCO) in the late 1970s and early 1980s--and did it all from prison. (1)

Multiple strands of mafia history meet in Cutolo's career. He was initiated into the 'ndrangheta in 1974, and plagiarised the Calabrian mafia's rituals for the NCO. (2)

He plagiarised 19th century poems about camorristi from the prison library to give the NCO an ideology, and himself an intellectual aura. He was known as 'the Professor'. (3)

Many of his recruits were vulnerable young criminals. He turned them into fanatics with an ideology that borrowed elements from extreme left groups of the time. (4)

Most notorious perhaps was the Ciro Cirillo episode. Cirillo was in charge of spending the vast sums allocated for reconstruction after the 1980 earthquake in Irpinia. He was kidnapped in 1981 by the Red Brigades.... (5)

Cirillo's party, the ruling DC, broke its policy of not negotiating with terrorists to pay a ransom and obtain his release. More than that, the DC went through Raffaele Cutolo to negotiate. (6)

Cutolo left a deep impression on popular culture, including Tornatore's rambling Il camorrista (1986) with its famous prison earthquake scene. (7)

Il camorrista sustained Cutolo's own myth about his first having been sent to prison for defending the honour of a woman. In reality he viciously murdered a fire fighter in a senseless road rage episode. (8)

And then of course there is Fabrizio De Andrè's song Don Raffaè, in the voice of a prison guard captivated by Cutolo's charisma. (9 ends)

i didn't know he was originally 'ndrangheta. i didn't even know it was possible to move between different organizations, altho i knew they work closely with one another quite often. is it common for mobsters to move between the 3 main mafias?

Became fairly common in 1970s

I was reading about inter-mob collaboration last night while watching Gomorra, apparently there has long been a suspected Camorra-Ndrangheta link

Raffaele Cutolo was born in 1941,killed a man Mario Viscido because insulted his sister Rosetta and get 24 y,got briefly out in 1974 but shortly turned back to prison. He was called The Professor because all the inmates was illeterates,Cutolo was inducted in the ndragheta and create his criminal organization NCO as a sort of ndrina, the NCo killed Mico Tripodo in 1974 as a favor for the powerful Piromallis.
The NCO started as a prison gang and was feared like today the Aryan Brotherhood.

He indoctrinated thousands of desperate young people who, once they left, started killing, imposing protection money and selling drugs.! milion lire for a murder (and then one million was the basic salary of a municipal employee) if you got caught the NCO will pay your lawyer send money to your family; Cutolo forced the industrialists to employ the NCO men relatives and thanks to his votes imposed the politicians in the province of naples.
When he had thousands of picciotti was strong enought to impose a tax 30k lires on every box of cigarettes and on every drug carbo; the other families created the NF or New Family, they had less man but more weapons and from 1978 to 1983 980 people died.

In 1991 to Nuvoletta mansion there was a meeting between the NCO,the NF and the Sicilian Mafia that say this to Cutolo: he the NF take Neaples while you will take all the territories out Naples and with the 1980 earthquake we woild divide the State money for the recostrunction but Cutolo decided to continue the war, that lost because his financial advisor Alfronso Rosanova was killed in 1983,the President of Repubblic Pertini was tired and send Cutolo to l'Asinara then a bunker island like Alcatraz.

What Cutolo really did:

When Aldo Moro, the president of Counsil was kidnapped in 1978 he send his lawyer to speak to the Magliaiana Gang that said to Cutolo where was Moro but the secret services said to Cutolo thanks but stay to your place.

In 1981 Ciro Cirillo was kidnapped by the Red Brigates,Cirillo knows all the secret of the recostrunction bussinesses so the secret service and the DC the leading party in Italy asked Cutolo to save Cirillo in exchange of a high reduction of the sentence.

Cutolo ordered to the Red Brigates that if Cirillo wouldn't be free soon he would order to kill al the brigatis in all the italian prison and Cirillo was free.

What Cutolo did not:

He never pissed on Totò Riina's shoes. Fist because never meet Riina, second because the neapoletans feared Cosa Nostra and Cutolo would be immediatly killed for this insult.

Wild Bill was born in Basilicata a region near the Campania and wiki say they was relatives but I dont believe it. They had only the same surname.
Just for the record, William Cutolo was born in Brooklyn, NY. His father Carmine also born in NY. His paternal grandfather Michael came to the US as an infant 1890. I don´t know why his wiki page says he was born in Italy. Morons making up stuff on there because they have no clue.

Oh, one more interesting thing. His paternal grandmother (Gussie) was of Russian descent. I assume she was jewish. So William Cutolo was "only" 3/4s Italian.

Interesting fact No 2 - William´s father Carmine was also a criminal. Arrested atleast once for robbery.

I read that he was invited to Lorenzo Nuvolettas farm, they wanted to initiate him into Cosa Nostra, and he declined. They apparently were stunned......

I dont think the Naples people feared Cosa Nostra, didnt someone shoot at the Nuvolettas, which pretty much severed the tie between the Nuvoletta and Casalesi? Was it Bardellino?
