Not anymore. Both Waste Management and Browning Ferris (now Republic Services) have largely left the NYC market. The very thing the city did to stop the mob's carting price inflation - capping the rate trash haulers can charge for collections - made it hard for the national companies to make money there. A company called Action Carting is now the biggest in the city from what I've read but they only have something like 15% of the market.
That’s interesting as I’ve heard Action is alleged to have wise guy connections . They are big in Jersey City I believe . The info I have could be totally false but wondering if anyone else has heard this . That fact they are located in NJ rather that NYC makes me more suspicious of them as well.
The BIC does a good job of screening waste hauling companies for mob connections but it's not perfect. I don't know one way or the other about Action Carting as far as mob ties. Its top guys are Italian, though obviously that doesnt automatically mean they're mobbed up. But it was that company Waste Management sold a lot of its assets to when it pulled out of the market. Another big hauling company (third largest) is Five Star Carting. There were some companies - like Mr T Carting for instance - that were allowed to stay in business after the indictments in the 1990s and the Giuliani administration instituted changes in the industry. Mr T Carting was a member of one of the mob's associations that controlled the business but apparently the government agreed it was simply a victim and had to be a member to do business.

For some reason they slip thru the cracks more in NJ

Have no idea if they are still connected and my guess is probably not but ELS logistics in Kearny is a big waste transportation and weighing in the area . These guys got taken down in that 97 bust and now they top dogs again and I mean top , even crazier is that have massive private equity backing . I think they also dba as NJ rail or something but it’s amazing how these guys manage to get back in 10 years down road

How exactly does the biggest waste hauling company in NYC (and North Jersey) operate without the Business Integrity Commission all over it if they're mob owned and controlled?

Looks like actual name they were dba was New Jersey Rail Carriers LLC but it seems they were recently acquired in 2016 by an ESI? Seems like some kind of complicated multi phase transaction which makes sense given the private equity partnership . Either way it looks like the Rizzos sold out and given this is old news I don’t feel out of line saying and I don’t know much but Anthony was all up in that 97 bust and they had him wiretapped talking some nonsense about politicians or something like that . Somehow he managed to get his family back in and ended up one of the biggest in the state , doing major waste transfer , land fills etc, a level above just carters . Crazy as Centre Partners were their backers and they are big time as well. Really wish we could find out more but guess they went legit or fooled some smart people into thinking they were. I could only imagine the sit downs if guys had some silent points , would of been west side guys for sure

There's a great book called "Takedown" on how the NYPD infiltrated and help break up mob control in garbage. BFI and Waste Management come into NY and essentially do exactly the same thing as the mob.
If H. Wayne Huizenga was not connected,
he definitely ran Waste Management with a mob mentality
in order to get established in the industry.
