Related to this murder, I've also read that a Martino Buccellato, who was convicted of the crime and given a life sentence, was said to have taken direction from Asaro. So it's possible that Asaro was a ranking member in CDG before he left.

When we talked about this in an earlier topic, Jimmy said he believes Buccellato is the older brother of the more well-known Felice Buccellato.

Right, and I think the court documents indicate that "Martino Buccellato" was deceased by that point. Felice definitely had a brother named "Martino," but I still can't say for sure if that's the one mentioned in the legal documents. "Martino" is not a common name in the family, but it does show up once in a while. For example, Joe Buccellato from Bushwick had a nephew named "Martino." The nephew was killed by the Corleonesi in 82.

Not to totally get off track here, but if you look at the Buccellato family chart I included in my book, note that I left a lot of members off the chart. I either left them out because they didn't connect to Detroit in any significant way, and in other cases I left civilians off the chart. Felice Buccellato (son of Giovanni), for example, had several brothers and sisters. One of his sisters married a Magaddino and one of his daughters married into Asaro family.

Here's some additional info I have (the dates are approximate because some may were calculated in 1896 and others in 1898):
Girolamo Asaro was born around 1860 and the son of Mariano Asaro. Elsewhere he said he was the son of Giuseppe (Josephi) Asaro and Anna Sarcona. Note: Sometimes the indictment calls him Giuseppe Asaro instead of Girolamo, and it has a lot of spelling errors.
The man he was convicted of killing, Giuseppe Costa, born around 1864, was the son of Salvatore Costa and Vincenza Garofalo.
Giuseppe Bonano (Bonanno?), born around 1854, son of Giuseppe, was an associate of Asaro.
Martino Buccellato, son of Giovanni, born around 1877.
Giovanni Buccellato, son of Felice, born around 1844.
Salvatore Buccellato, son of Felice, born around 1847.

Interesting sidenote: Girolamo Asaro was defended by Charles E. Le Barbier, who also defended Giuseppe Morello.

One of the people who testified on his behalf was Giuseppe Borruso, born in 1872, who was a city councilman in Castellammare in 1895. He came to America around 1904 and lived at 28 Stanton Street, NYC.
Another Momo Asaro, son of Giuseppe, born in 1851, testified.
All of them testified that he was really Vincenzo Fudera, son of Giuseppe Fudera and Anna Sarcona.
One of the people who loaned him money for bail was Carlo Costantino -- the same guy who allegedly killed Detective Petrosino in Palermo in 1909 (Petrosino, by the way, also testified in this case).

Great stuff Rick, thanks.

Right, this gets confusing but the "Felice" you mention was my great-great-great grandfather. He had five sons (identified on the chart in my book). Giovanni and Salvatore were two of the sons and are listed on my chart. Salvatore was my great-great grandfather.

The Martino identified here matches up with the official family tree, in terms of birth date. It's the death date that is throwing me off though. My guess though, is this "Martino" and don Felice's brother are the same person.
