This should be good
Looks good.

I like the cast. I think with the newer Mob based movies they never mix up the cast, so It always ends up as Pesci and DeNiro
Although I think they're great, I feel like there's a lot of potential for other actors.
Nice how they're giving them a chance.

Can't wait to see it regardless.

Noticed they're using the subtitle "A Sopranos Story". That's exactly what Star Wars started using for their ongoing Star Wars movies, "A Star Wars Story".

Obviously part of it is to promote the movie using the Sopranos brand but I wouldn't be surprised if they're testing the waters with this movie and might be planning other side stories in the Sopranos world.

That’s an interesting take B. and I must admit I agree. Has Chase given any clues on future side stories if this one works out well?

Obviously with a show that has writing as good as the sopranos dude, there’s a million different ways to go. I personally think a New York story, such as Phil Leonardo’s interactions with NJ before he went to prison and compromised would be cool. Or Carmine early on in his reign as boss or maybe the Soprano family interactions with the other 5 families. If the goal is building out side stories from the Sopranos universe, I don’t think they can focus on the immediate Sopranos family like young Tony as the main story (unless of course Michael G. crushes it as young Tony).

One thing I’m interested to see in the movie is the intentional and unintentional humor that made the entire series so great. It’ll be tough to match the series but I’m hopeful.

Haven't seen any clues about other movies except "A Sopranos Story" branding ala Star Wars, but you can guarantee it has been discussed. The Sopranos might not be as big as Marvel or Star Wars but anything based in that world is going to be a hit.

I never considered the idea of a Sopranos story from NYC's point of view. Always thought it was funny the NY guys are made out to be the villains on the show when the NJ guys are just as bad. Would love to see the Sopranos team do a real gangster movie about Johnny Sack's early days as a soldier.

Long time listener, first time caller......hopefully you guys dont chew me up that bad.

The Sopranos is the greatest tv show of all time and up there with mob classics like goodfellas, casino and godfather. I rewatch it every couple of years and it will never get old. However I do have super low expectations for this based on a few things. Many of the points have already been touched on through this thread and its all just my opinion.

Casting looks pretty bad. Many have spoken about the authenticity of the sopranos for its era and I couldn't agree more. Almost the entire cast was tri state italians and the authenticity is one of the greatest aspects of the show. The tri state italian accent is huge and very hard to pull off by a non native. I'm not even from the area and I can usually tell when is not natural. I can't imagine what the natives must think. And most of the non tri state italians on the original show were at least from the north east. I understand Richie Aprile was played by a jew but thats one character only? Plus David Proval was amzing and looked/ sounded the part perfectly.

The casting for this prequel movie just seems very disappointing to say the least. I understand the casting pool for an authentic mob movie is probably extremely hard these days but come on, they're still out there. Liotta is great and im sure theres a few others in the film but most of the leads dont look super authentic. Gandolfini kid doesn't really look right also. For some reason I imagined Tony in his teens being absolute bull. Not necessarily cracking heads and hot tempered but just physically built like a football player. The trailer doesn't give that impression. Maybe its just me but it also sounded like in the trailer that he was putting on a fake accent which would be hard to watch. Maybe Im wrong.

For the era of the movie being the 60s it would be nice to see some dialogue in italian, by native italian speakers. I'm not an expert on this but I would assume the mob in jersey at this time still probably spoke lots of italian? Especially being that the sopranos is loosely based on the decavalcante who i've read are extremely sicilian even until recently. I'm sure their older members probably spoke italian in the 60s right? Having italian language(dialect would be even better) in the movie would add tons of authenticity. I always thought one of the best aspects of part 2 was that half the movie was in sicilian. Pretty authentic. And while it might be hard to find actors that are native italian speakers from the tri state area they are definitely still out there. Furio grew up in Paterson right….

I understand its a prequel but I feel this whole mob era is over done in hollywood. I understand the 50s-90s were the golden years with the most content but one of my favourite things about the sopranos was how it was current(when it first aired). They touched on modern topics that were so relatable. A spinoff/sequel based currently would have been amazing. It sucks they killed Chris off because anything based on him currently would have been amazing to watch. There a few other storys that would have been cool to see.

I do trust david chase and he can really do whatever he wants, but this movie just seems underwhelming. I never thought I'd ever see him do anything mob related again and for this to be it is just disappointing. I agree with posters who said there is so many other storeylines that could have been explored not directly related to the sopranos. I wish David Chase did something more original maybe. Something based in New York with the 5 families would be cool.

I think a great storyline would be a mobster who got locked up in the 80s who got out today and has to adjust to modern times. That would be amazing with endless possibilities. Plus its pretty authentic and happens all the time. Gene Gotti just got out after 30 years right?

Another cool idea I thought would be having a show/movie based on a modern day zips point of view. The couple of episodes that showed Furio as the lead always interested me. Seeing what its like to be an Italian immigrant and zip in current times would be cool. Just ideas I guess. Sorry about my long post.

More than anything I’m hoping that it’s not a piece of woke garbage like the rest of what Hollywood is pushing out these days it almost seems like to get anything made these day writers have to incorporate some type of leftist pandering & judging by the setting being during the Newark riots it seems like they might be going this route...

Before the pandemic hit, I met an Italian dude out in Union, NJ who told me that he played a bit part in the movie, which he described as an “Italian racist” during one of the riot scenes.

I totally agree with you. Imagine for example, a sequel showing these guys' reactions to Trump, Biden, QAnon, BLM, Antifa, capitol hill riots, trans rights, social media and the rise of the modern internet (The internet in 2007 was primitive compared to today). They could show the state of the DiMeo Family, New York crime families, Lupertazzi and others now. They could bring back some of the younger guys like Little Paulie Germani, Perry Annunziata , Benny Fazio and Walden Belfiore; they're now around the age Tony was in S6. Maybe some older guys have gotten released in the years since which would be an opportunity to get veteran actors involved (Imagine Mickey Rourke, Andrew Dice Clay or Vincent Gallo as an NJ made guy who was in federal prison since 1998 and he's out now). The violence of the show's era is pretty rare nowadays. Probably due to better law enforcement and advancements in technology which make illegal acts a lot tougher. Nevertheless, I'd still love to see a sequel depicting the New Jersey mob in the 2020s.

Maybe AJ seeing Tony get killed in front of him would be enough for him to snap and get involved in crime. Maybe he could even take on the mantle as the new Chrissy character. He turns to drugs to cope with his father's death. There are already a lot of other similarities there: mental illness, pipe dreams, stupidity. Also it would probably follow the rise of Benny Fazio, criminal mastermind

To be fair every character in the original series played an "Italian racist" haha.

I turn movies and TV off these days the second I notice them forcing an agenda. These days it's hard to watch anything for that reason.

I'm fine with storylines about race and politics if it feels natural. The Sopranos was great at it until the Vito storyline. The Noah storyline was perfect... Tony acted like a piece of shit, but you end up hating Noah not because he's black and Jewish but because he's an unbearable college boy.
