Early on around the 4:30 mark, Pennisi says Joseph Grimaldi was an acting captain before being shelved. If he was acting for his father, who was official captain, that would make more sense (to me at least) than them running two separate crews.
All roads lead to New York.

Important to note Lovaglio testified that Natale Mule was acting captain for Joseph Grimaldi. B also got info that Vito and Joseph had been split up and sent to separate crews:

No, that's muscular dystrophy.

He was shelved and multiple Bonanno CWs have said tribute wasn't demanded for most Bonanno activities during the Rastelli and Massino eras. Don't know if that's changed but I'd be interested in whether Capeci has concrete info the Grimaldis pay tribute from their bakery, especially after being shelved.CabriniGreen wrote: ↑Sat Jul 30, 2022 3:24 amI don't quite get it. Doesn't the Mozzarella guy pay? And all the food guys? Why wouldn't Grimaldi pay?B. wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 3:58 pm Capeci seems to be saying the Grimaldis continued paying tribute to Mancuso via their bakery and were in better standing than Cammarano. Strange they'd be on the shelf and passing along money from their legitimate business -- Vito Grimaldi paid large tribute to the Massino admin from his joker poker machines (one of the few operations the Family "officially" taxed) but it would be news if they've been sending up money from the bakery.
I find that part of the article the most confusing -- was Vito Grimaldi still on the shelf when he died or was he reinstated?

Is it possible it was more of an extortion type of tribute? Like the family lost the privilege of protection after the shelvings?B. wrote: ↑Sat Jul 30, 2022 5:40 pmHe was shelved and multiple Bonanno CWs have said tribute wasn't demanded for most Bonanno activities during the Rastelli and Massino eras. Re: Gang Land July 28 2022
Just saw an article from early 2015 that says Bonventre already had his auto shop in Upstate NY by then. Vinny Asaro was also recorded in 2013 saying Bonventre turned down consigliere because he doesn't want to be part of things anymore.
So he seems to have been spending time away from NYC for many years and was already pulling away from the Family before the Mancuso/Cammarano issue.
Re: Gang Land July 28 2022
If the Bonanno family receives money from the Grimaldi bakery it's probably because the Bonanno family is considered to be a part owner of the bakery.
Maybe Vito Grimaldi started the bakery in partnership with, or sold a piece of it to, an Bonanno member who has since died and his share went to the Bonanno family. Or the Bonanno family invested part of the family treasure in the bakery at some point.

I vaguely recall I believe it was Vinny Bascaino was caught talking about Ronnie Mozzarella and how if it wasn’t for the Bonanno family his business wouldn’t be as huge as it is and I believe he paid tribute from his business also. Prob same scenario with the Grimaldi’s.Eld wrote: ↑Sun Jul 31, 2022 6:55 am If the Bonanno family receives money from the Grimaldi bakery it's probably because the Bonanno family is considered to be a part owner of the bakery.
