I mention this because there are so few habitable sections of Newark.
There are still decavs in Peterstown, as well, from what I read on here.

In reference to the Driscoll Bridge dividing territory, are talking waste hauling? The Philly guys were never much into garbage were they?

During the last Joe Ligambi trial it was reported that he had significant ties to Top Job Disposal Inc, a South Philadelphia based waste management company. I haven't heard of any other Philadelphia/garbage connections but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more, given Ligambi prior relationship.
https://www.bigtrial.net/2012/12/tony-s ... rbage.html
"The SCI report alleged that Ligambi was placed on the payroll by the late Mauro Goffredo, an owner of the company. Goffredo died of natural cases in 2006.
Goffredo was mentioned earlier in the trial by Louis Monacello, a key government witness. Monacello, once a top associate of co-defendant George Borgesi, said Borgesi was livid when he learned that Ligambi had "gotten his hooks" into Goffredo.
"Georgie said Mario (Mauro was frequently referred to as Mario) was his guy," Monacello said.
Borgesi is Ligambi's nephew. Monacello also testified that Borgesi's mother, Ligambi's sister, at one point was dating Goffredo.
At the time the SCI report was released, Gregory Goffredo told a reporter he had no idea why his father had placed Ligambi on the company payroll.
"They were friends," he said, adding that one of the last things his father asked him to do was keep Ligambi as an employee through the life of Top Job's trash hauling contract at the Philadelphia Food Distribution Center which was to expire in 2010.
Gregory Goffredo, who said he got out of the trash business shortly after that contract expired, said he complied with his father's wish. When he was asked if Ligambi ever did any work for the company, he didn't miss a beat.
"Not that I know of," he replied."
Interesting that Gregory Goffredo got out of the trash business. Similar to what Garbageman has been alluding to, i.e waste management has been increasingly less profitable as a small business and less lucrative for LCN generally speaking.

Re: Current state of New Jersey mob
I know down in the Italian Market the garbage guys are constantly undercutting each other and a new one comes in. Now its Gold Medal, but guys are constantly coming in undercutting whatever the previous guy is charging so that indicates to me that the Philly guys don't really care who has the Market's contract. Pretty sure they just care about the big Produce Distribution Center down on Essington Ave. That was Top Job's contract and whoever has it now probably has to pay the Philly guys for a cut of the contract if I had to guess, but that's exactly what I'm doing... Guessing. I used to work at one of the produce joints down on 9st in the Italian market and we'd take the big box truck down to the distro center to pick our stuff up and one of the drivers found an envelope with ~$10grand in cash and the friggin guy turned it in... I was so mad. Not implying it was OC related or anything it was probably someone who was using it to buy their weekly product, but I was mad because I bet the guys just whacked it up in the office instead of trying to find the poor bastad who lost it...

Downtown Newark has a Whole Foods now believe it or not. The Ironbound (Downneck) is all Brazilians, Portuguese , and European Spanish. The really bad areas of Newark are the South Ward and the border by Irvington. The Ironbound , Downtown, and Forest Hill aren’t bad at all. The Ironbound is a fun area to hang out in, smokeshow Brazilian girls everywhere and great restaurants.

Like I previously mentioned , Mimmo Marzullo of the DeCavalcantes had/has a nice little coffee shop on Bloomfield Ave in Newark. I don’t know if it’s Still there.
Re: Current state of New Jersey mob
While I'm aware of the no-show job Ligambi had, you don't see many specific examples of Philly guys involved in waste hauling over the years. Back in the day, there were probably more examples of the Bufalinos working with the NY families in illegal dumping in Pennsylvania.

Ironbound was decent last time I was near Ferry Street. But who knows if it all burned down like last night. Cities changing so quickly now...JeremyTheJew wrote: ↑Mon Jun 01, 2020 11:12 pmNewark is just all Hood rightFlushing wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 7:09 pm They have a guy in Newark but I forget his name. Re: Current state of New Jersey mob
Probably tough on the DeCavalcante money wise they have to share there territory with The New York families and Philadelphia
Re: Current state of New Jersey mob
Not really any reason for them to exist nowadays, right?
I mean, the DeCavs are probably smaller as a family today than the Genovese and Lucchese jersey crews. Or am I wrong?

Not too far off actually. The Genovese most likely have more active members and associates in Jersey than the DeCavalcantes at this point. I don't think the Luccheses do.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
Re: Current state of New Jersey mob
Yeah, seems the gambling is eaten up by the NY families. The DeCavalcantes still have interests in some construction and trucking companies but they lost their long time powerbase in LIUNA Local 394. More recent cases have involved some cocaine dealing, contraband cigarettes, etc. There's a reason Stango said, "We're weak."

Re: Current state of New Jersey mob
In the modern Bonanno -> Sicily thread I made, the 2019 Italian investigation revealed that the Ribera mafia has gambling machines in Montreal via the Rizzuto group. Joe Gatto of the DeCavalcantes had ties to the Bonanno Montreal group and some other references have been made to connections between them (including a 1990s smuggling scheme, but that was ages ago). If the Ribera mafia is connected to Montreal it opens up the possibility that they have maintained ties with their paesani in Elizabeth and NJ, but it remains to be seen.
Newer member Luigi Oliveri's parents came over in the 1970s from Partinico but as far as I can tell there is no Sicilian mafia connection. He grew up in relative poverty in Peterstown which I assume is how he got connected to the local mafia.
If the DeCavalcantes have any hope, I would say it's through their Sicilian connections, but it's a different time. In previous decades they could bring Sicilians over and give them union jobs but their options are no doubt more limited now.

Forgot about that, was this part of his comment about being under the Gambinos or was it from a separate conversation?Wiseguy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 3:32 pm Yeah, seems the gambling is eaten up by the NY families. Newark, Camden, and Paterson... three of the most dangerous cities in Jersey were all kept peaceful and protests were done without looting due to high ranking gang members of all different sets coming together in agreement that they wouldn’t burn their own shit down. That’s fresh street talk.Flushing wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 10:46 amIronbound was decent last time I was near Ferry Street. But who knows if it all burned down like last night.
