Thanks for posting. In the Real Thing, Valachi seems to say that Luciano was official boss until the 1950s, and that Moretti was acting boss at some point around the time Vito Genovese came back from Italy.

Yes, Valachi got his dates wrong.

Didn't Frank Costello serve 1-2 years in the later period? If so that might be a probable era when Moretti was acting.

Costello became the official boss when he met with Luciano in Cuba in late 1946, shortly before Lucky was deported to Italy.

Later period? Do you mean in the 1950s? Moretti was dead by then. Costello had legal troubles periodically from appr 1952 til he was shot in 1957. Did time in between 1952 and 1953. And again in 1956. Jimmy Alo was acting boss in 1956.

I believe what the informant meant by "Eastern Syndicate" is actually the Genovese Family. I have no record of who was acting boss in 1952 and 1953.
There you have it, never printed before.

I'm surprised that Alo would be an acting boss when Genovese was available. I could see Genovese as acting boss and Alo as acting underboss.

Looking at other files it's possible that Alo taking over was an unfounded underworld rumor:

Yeah, looks like Alo was never selected Costello´s replacement. Carmine Bove, Fred "Poggiarelli" (clearly a reference to Fred "Poggi" Toriello and a "rackateer" named "Malindri" (Mike Miranda?) were all under consideration. I´m surprised Vito Genovese was not mentioned.

Found this, which may be more closer to the truth:

When Costello went to prison in the late 1950s Genovese has already replaced him. I can see Catena being made a crew boss by Costello after Moretti was killed in 1951, but it doesn't make sense that Catena was appointed a boss by Costello when Costello already lost his power, having been demoted to nothing. It just doesn't fit with the chronology.

Unless they went to Costello following Genovese's incarceration and Costello "suggested" Catena as a candidate. He was out of power but probably retained some measure of influence/pull.

My thinking is that Costello made Catena acting boss in 1956, when he was still the boss. In 1956, Costello was sentenced to 5 years for tax evasion. It was after the murder attempt on him in May 1957, that Costello was demoted and Genovese took power. So if this is correct, Catena was made captain in 1951, acting boss in 1956, underboss in 1957.

That chronology makes sense. Well, then, that's a good find HK.
