Big crew. Do you know how many of them were local to knickerbocker village?HairyKnuckles wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 4:45 am DiChiara was probably born and raised on the same block as the location of his social club. I have in my notes that he was apprehended back in 1970 and indicted on hijacking charges. His address at that time was listed at 40 Monroe Street, NY.
He came up under the Joe "Beck" Lapi/George Filippone/Louis Gaccione/Rosario Gangi crew, a Genovese crew very active on lower Manhattan. Lapi took over from Saro Mogavero in or around 1974. DiChiara was probably made in the late 1980s. Some of the crew members were (at various times) Ernest Butchie Montevecchi, Frank Vispisiano (known to the police as a hitman), Salvatore Gencarelli, Mike Clemente (who in the 1970s reported directly to Tieri), Joe Agone, Anthony Albanese, Philip Albanese, Sammy Aparo, Joe Calabro, Frank Caruso, Charlie Coppolino, Joe Mogavero, Sal DeMeo, Angelo Lapi, Joseph Zito (who was moved to be under Vincent Gigante in 1980 but later transfered back to this crew) and others. The crew was heavily involved with drug trafficking in the 1950s and 1960s. But also (with the Lanza crew) had a grip on the Fulton Fish Market way back.
In the 1970s, the crew had a hook on John Albert, a notorious toxic waste dumper. According to an investigation, Albert met weekly with members of the crew and delivered money(at least 3,000 dollars) to them.

I don't know but my guess is that most of them grew up in that neighborhood or on the streets surrounding the area but later moved out to the suburbs. By the 1980s, I don't think any of them actually lived there anymore. Isn't Knickerbocker Village populatated today mostly by latinos and blacks?Philly d wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 7:40 amBig crew. Another made member of the crew may have been Angelo Tuminaro btw.

Re: Peter DiChiara
Is Gangi still active ? Seems to be a very low key guy that was tied to big rackets - Fulton st, Port Nwk, stock days
He seems to have been a big money maker
That crew, even right before Petey death must have been big, capable with all kinds of different rackets

im not sure, i used to have to drive by there for work but it was always on cherry. havent been on monroe forever. i cant picture where on Monroe it would be, because what i remember there is no commerical space or anything like that on that side other than maybe a tutor/school place for chinese kids. maybe the other poster meant on Catherine Street, or maybe ther is still something going on up on MadisonPhilly d wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 7:31 amYeah you are right about Monroe. So where is it in Monroe? Every time I have been petey reds it’s been quiet. Also good luck on getting an apartment. I think you need to have a connection.newera_212 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 6:24 pmthe west side of the building i believe is the back of the building on Monroe StreetPhilly d wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 10:23 pmI have been Petey reds place across from the park. THERE IS ANOTHER CLUB ON THE WESTSIDE OF KNICKERBOCKER not sure if its active but it says social club
for a while i was driving by there 2-3 days a week and rain or shine id see the door to Petey Red's club open, with guys inside. sometimes as early as 6:30 am. i havent been by in a while but the last time i was there (after he passed away) the door was open. i wonder if the club is used for LCN stuff now or if its just old guys from the building hanging out.
one time i passed by to visit someone at the near by rutgers houses on the other side of the bridge so i thought id check to see what was happening by the club and there were a ton of guys inside and outside, with younger looking guys "flanking" the place and another group of young guys holding court on the corner of cherry street.
knickerbocker is kind of a fascinating place. we should try to do a talley of mobsters that lived there. cantarella, joey d'amico, embaratto, tony mirra i think, lefty, the lucchese tortorella brothers, jimmy ida had an apartment there, dichiara, im sure many many more. you'll still see some italian flags hanging from windows there
its crazy the buildings management let dichiara run a club there. the building is overseen by NY State and is a highly regulated place in every aspect, so for him to operate carte blanch like that there is just weird.
if anyone was looking for a cheap apartment in manhattan, KV opened a lottery for their wait list a few months ago. i believe a 1 bed there goes for $900 but its based on your income. perfect for a guy like DiChiara who makes a majority of his income off the books. D'Arco scammed an affordable housing development back in his day as well
the connection thing with these apartments..not so much anymore. maybe back in the day but the oversight is very strict now. basically get lucky on the lottery, get on the wait list, and wait it out. nothing can expidite that outside of bribing government officials and i doubt thats happening to the scale it used to anymore. the most amount of scamming going on is just faking income or household size to qualify, things like that.
i remember hearing back in the day that the Chilli family had something to do with the apartment selection process at knickerbocker, but i dont know if thats true. i didnt even think the Chilis (Bonannos) were from there, but who knows. again its amazing that many number of made guys came from one simple apartment building

good info. are those albanese guys mentioned related to Elio Albanese? i know whatever crew he was in (same crew?) was a lower east side crew, and his knickname is "chinatown" (which these days, is where knickerbocker sits). Same with Carmine Russo who lived his whole life on the bottom of Mulberry Street, the Chinese section, by the courtHairyKnuckles wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 8:50 amI don't know but my guess is that most of them grew up in that neighborhood or on the streets surrounding the area but later moved out to the suburbs. knickerbocker is mostly white and chinese people. especially chinese. chinese have kinda crowbared their way into everything, especially if it involves government programs or affordabl housing like knickerbocker. not a ton of blacks and latinos, they are more in the other bigger similar buildings close by like 275 Cherry, Governor Gardens, and the various housing projects . chinese and jewish make up the biggest beneficiaries of public assistance in NYC, they all have a hook...

Not sure about the relation (Elio and the Albaneses mentioned above). Elio was born in 1950 so cant do the needed research by using NY census (the 1950 NY census is not available on the net yet). However, Elio was part of another smaller crew, with Carmine Russo' and the Romanos. These guys were under Harry Lanza/Toddo Marino/Tommy Conrtaldo and Malangone. This crew was also around Knickerbocker Village and also had a grip on the FFM.

I don’t think elio was from kv. I know there were some gangsters from other projects nearby. I forget the name, but one guy Was friends with my uncle. I remember he said kv was “where the rich guys lived”

lol. if they thought KV was where the rich guys lived, they must have been in the projects for real. maybe rutgers houses? the paper interviewed some 100 year old italian immigrant lady from there a few years ago who was getting evicted because she visited italy for a few months and they were trying to say the apt wasnt her primary residence.
interesting neighborhood, that little stretch. probably the last non-yuppie holdout in manhattan

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

its from an old NYT article about the discrepancy in incomes in LCN, and how theres a typical class system in LCN - just like in "regular" life. even within the same crime family there is a huge disparity.
the article's made its rounds on the forums im sure, but here it is:
https://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/10/nyregion/10mob.html
i liked the parts on the article specifically about this Genovese crew, because we tend to think of them as a step above the rest, and more advanced...just outright better than the other 4 families. but they're what...arguably 200 members deep? its probably safe to say that over half of them are guys just like this, low down knuckle dragging thugs living score-to-score.
even anthony antico who was a member of their administration got caught up on the phone instructing his crew members to home invasion rob some poor guy who won a big bet at the horse track
imagine being 70 years old stuck in brooklyn or stuck in some rent controlled apartment downtown, plotting armed robberies to make ends meet. while a guy 25 years younger than you from your same induction ceremony is running contracting companies, partners in all sorts of business, etc.. LMAO. seems like a rough life for a lot of these guys, even the Genovese
