Old men doing mob hits

Post by B. »

The rumor about Tony Caponigro being the shooter in the Bruno hit (which I have a hard time believing) got me thinking about the general idea of old men doing mob hits. Caponigro would have been 69-years-old if he was the triggerman and I won't get into why I question Fresolone's theory (there are a couple better threads for that), but it's funny to think of guys in that age range pulling the trigger.

"Old" is open to interpretation and some people age better than others, so not looking to restrict this to a specific age, but I'm thinking 60+ or ideally around ~65 or older. That tends to be when people really start showing their age. You don't have to be an athlete to pull a trigger, but older people start to have all kinds of issues with mobility, vision, even basic awareness of their surroundings, so it would seem like a last resort to use them in a murder. Of course age 65 in the year 2000 is different from age 65 in 1950 (or 1930 for that matter), so that's worth thinking about.

Can't help but think of the Sopranos scene where Uncle Junior shoots Tony. I was watching it with my Mom when that episode aired and I don't know if I've ever seen her laugh so hard. An old friend of mine watched the series from start to finish years after it aired and he sent me a text message when he got to that episode because of Junior. Easily one of the funniest shootings in any TV or movie I've seen, would love to imagine old guys doing hits like that in real life. The Sopranos also covered this topic with the Bobby Sr. scene, where he dies after hitting Mustang Sally. Coincidentally, I've always thought an old Burt Young would have played the perfect Caponigro.

As for real murders, Nick Stefanelli was 69 when he killed Joe Rossi then killed himself, though it was an unsanctioned murder and Stefanelli looks to have been in good shape for his age. I'm sure there are better examples people can start filling in. I'm mainly looking for old men as shooters, but it's worth mentioning them acting as drivers or other members of a hit team if you know of any.

Also as a sub-topic feel free to mention any disabled or otherwise impaired guys of any age who have been involved in hits.

This thread is starting to feel more and more like some kind of fetish the longer I type...

Frank Gambino was in his 60s when he served as the shooter in that drive by shooting of Anthony Milicia. Al Pajamas Pagano was also in his 60s when he took part in the attempt on John Veasey.

Late Genovese soldier Albert "Chinky" Facchiano offered to do hits at a 2001 meeting when he was 91 years old. Fellow soldier Joseph Zito said they were supposed to be retired at their age and the younger guys should handle the murders. Chinky's reply was "You're never retired."

Greg Scarpa Sr was around 63 when the Colombo war broke out in 91. I believe he killed 3 or 4 guys during the war.

In Detroit 1976, gambler Ernie Kanakis was attacked by 3 mobsters (Frank Randazzo, Joe Siragusa and Nick Ditta, aged 72, 69 and 71) and killed all of them in self-defence.

Agree but the Feds still were able to use the tapes he made.

Charles ‘Chalutz’ Gagliodotto was about 61 when he killed Frank ‘Chico’ Gangi and Angelo Tuminaro’s little brother Frank ‘Frankie Boy’ Tuminaro. He invited them to a social club near Mott St and shot them both in the head after a previous drug deal had gone bad.

After Angelo Tuminaro received permission to retaliate against Gagliodotto, David Petillo who was Gagliodotto close friend and was also about 60 years old killed Gagliodotto.

Several of the Chicago guys in the basement beating/killing
of the Spilotro brothers would qualify age wise.

If you believe Goodfellas, Joe Pesci's character was whacked by a senior citizen.

According to Joe Dogs Iannuzzi, Tommy Agro apparently boasted that he was the one who killed Tommy Desimone. Not sure if that's supported/corroborated by other information or if Agro meant he was the shooter, only that he made the claim.
