Moe Dalitz and the Cleveland Syndicate

Post by JCB1977 »

I came across this link that led me to some good information in a partial Moe Dalitz FBI file. If you scroll about 1/4 page down under the case # LV 92-461, the first paragraph says that evidence supports that the Cleveland Syndicate owned 79% of the Desert Inn in Las Vegas.

I've always been fascinated with Moe Dalitz...he succeeded at what Michael Corleone was trying to do in Las Vegas...he went legitimate. I'd have to say he was the wealthiest gangster of all time.

I do not know much about him, but I was interested, was he any better than Lansky or Rothstein?

Well he died of old age(better than Rothstein) and was a well respected legitimate millionaire (better than Lansky)

It seems that he succeeded in creating some legit picture of himself but still, his whole life he ducked the cameras and avoided touchy questions by acting deaf or a little bit hostile. Still I think that he was quite aware regarding the general population knowing about his real nature and it bothered him a lot since the whole situation looked like doing makeup and putting perfume on a pig which recently got out of the stinky shit and mud. I wonder how many times occurred to him when real wealthy and powerful snobs told him in his face that he was a crook while sitting on the same table and giving donations to those same snobs....the definition of pure shame lol

Well see, this is how these Jews got big. I'm gonna take the Cleveland family for instance. They had the Jews, these Jews, like Moe Dalitz, Sammy Tucker and Morris Kleinman, the ones the owned the Dessert Inn. They had two or three gambling houses in Cleveland, right? Well, maybe they declare a million dollars at the end of the year, or whatever.. Well, you know, come to the end of seven, eight or 10 years, if you wanted to invest 5 or 10 million in something, you could show that you made that kind of money in the past. So that's how they got successful.

I think it was in 1940 or '41, when they bought they Beverly Club in Kentucky. Well they showed money, they had money to show it!! The Italians couldn't do it, you give an Italian a million dollars, he puts it under the cellar!! How can he invest a half a million dollars? You understand??

So that's how these Jews made money, because they could show money!! And the more money that they made, they more that they declared, the more that they could invest!! See, that's where the Italians made a mistake, they should've done it themselves..

That inspired me to read Page 68-69 of the Weasel's book. That's the section where the California guys put the shakedown on Meyer Lansky. Weasel claims he slapped Moe Sedway and then Doc Stacher in the mouth in Vegas until Lansky went running to New York for help.

Now I have become quite interested in your story, is there any biographical book about it?

He’s known as “The Godfather of Las Vegas”, became a legitimate casino magnate. He was part of what the media referred to as the old Mayfield Rd Mob with the Milano brothers and some of the other Jewish gangsters

He was worth”hundreds of millions” by the time he died “on paper.”

Totally believable. Frattiano was made. The others were not. Not even Italian. The only thing they could do was reach out and complain.
