Do we know the history of Saverio Santora and where he historically fits into the administration?

Great thread by the way (are we learning JCB?).
If I'm not correct let me know, but I I believe Santora became official underboss in 86 or 87. Replacing Tony Salerno as official underboss after Salerno goes to prison. Before that I believe Santora become captain of Salerno's old crew. Not sure if he succeeded him directly. Santora was Barney Bellomo's captain.
Santora died in the late '80s. He was ID'd as the Chin's sub boss when Chin got promoted.

I'm not suggesting it is gospel, but I never "heard" Tony being captain of 116. At least, I don't believe so. If there's an fbi file that states it and is available I would love to read that. But on the ground in Harlem who people cited was Coppola, Lombardo, Ferro, Santoro, Monaco and when the "Cat" passed that's where it got blurry. The papers were citing Fish, Vinny Dinapoli, and then when Bellomo's name first popped up on the media radar as the "street boss" they mentioned him as captain of 116. I got to tell you I never once saw Barney Bellomo in Harlem. What I mean by that was that he didn't hold court. That doesn't mean anything but all those other guys had a visible presence. They were known as owning a business there. According to the fbi Tony Salerno was a messenger for Coppola. from N.Y. to FLA and back and vice versa. That speaks to me because Tony wasn't around there yonder back then where the WWW Mafia place him. Thinking about barney, I probably wouldn't have recognized him if I had walked by him. Who was Barney in the 70s and 80s? He was the unknown soldier. Pileggi or those micks from the finook gazette weren't writing about him. He comes into public knowledge via Capeci and the persecution of the chin.

I tend to think that once the feds were circling around Tony Salerno in the '80s, the 116th Street crew probably became that in name only. Because by then, that was all she wrote as far as anything visible. The only one out there who you could see in the remaining few years after was Buster (and Fat Charlie) as far as a real wiseguy (and charlie the scumbag who obviously knew people and who I discovered recently on this forum was "made." Jesus! Ivy league my ass! ). Buster was in the position that Patsy ("Rigolettos Restaurant") is in now. But those other guys? Farby? Ernie Mush? The one who got life for ordering the captain of the Springfield crew to be killed? Tommy "Fish." They were bronx guys.

Wasn't Barney based in the Bronx always? Or no? Anyone know where his old man lived?

According to this .pdf George Abbott was a Communist?? No fucking way. Total bullshit. It's a hatchet job. I seen this guy dancing at the Park Palace on 110 with his comare. Give me a break.

Great piece of info B. as usual.
Pretty surprised his dad actually lived in the neighborhood, never heard or read about it until now. Always thought he was a Village guy.
In any case, Bellomo never hung out Arthur Avenue...Of course everybody knew who he was but he wasn't from the neighborhood. And it's not like in those days you would miss a guy like him, when I was a kid there had to be at least 10 clubs within two blocks of each other for three different families.
Back then we used to practice on what is now Castle Hill little league field and right across the street was a crappy deli from where he used to hold court almost every day, corner of Zerega and Gleason. The guy who owned it was a pakistani who 'fell behind on the rent'...From what I recall they used it for years and years. About four blocks from there you had a Lucchese club right below the Zerega station who was still opened as of couple years ago...

Yep, that's him. Check this thread out, it has a lot of interesting info on the Bellomo family:

The Bellomos I tracked in the Bellomo thread (who are almost certainly close relatives of Barney, if not his father/grandfather) originally lived in East Harlem (prime Corleonesi territory) and later moved to the Bronx. Not sure the exact year he moved, but Salvatore Bellomo looks to have grown up in East Harlem and by the time he was in his early 30s was living in the Bronx. Guy is really an enigma.

My mother's family is from the east bronx. My uncle said growing up it was all West Side and Luchese. He bought into the Gambinos being in the Bronx, but was very shocked when he started hearing about the Bonannos having a presence there. He grew up in 60's. Was there always a Bonnanos presence or was it a newer thing?
