Bulger Indictment Info
Spent some time today breaking down the info from the Bulger Indictment. Keep in mind Im not B. or any of the other great researchers on the forum but i figured it would be nice to have all the info in one place in case anyone who has never researched Bulger or the Patriarca Family from that time period would like to see it. Also any additions or corrects are very welcome. All of this info comes from the 4th superseding indictment of Francis P. Salemme, James J. Bulger, Stepen J. Flemmi, Robert P. Deluca and James M. Martorano, and info from the third superseding indictment of Bulger and the Flemmi brothers.
Patriarca Family
-In 1981, Raymond Patriarca is the boss, Gennaro Angiulo is underboss, Nicolo Angiulo is consigliere. Capos include Ilario Zannino, Donato Angiulo, Nicholas Biano, and Peter Joseph Limone. Limone labeled as capo intrigues me considering he has been in jail since 1968 at this point. Was he upped to capo while in jail or was he a capo when he was sent to jail for life? Also capos at this time are Nicola Giso and Samual Granito.
-In October 1989, when the induction ceremony was taped, Raymond Patriarca Jr. is boss, Nicholas Bianco is underboss(the family underboss, William Grasso, was killed on June 13, 1989 in Connecticut), and Joseph Russo is the consigliere as well as acting as an underboss of the Greater Boston area. Capos included Charles Quintaina, Vincent Ferrara, Robert Carrozza, Biagio DiGiacomo and Matthew Guglielmetti Jr. Im guessing Limone isnt listed because he was not at the ceremony? Robert Deluca, Carmen Tortora, Vincent Federico and Richard Floramo were inducted at this ceremony. Also capos at this time are Salatore Giglia, Angelo Iaconi, and Edward Romano.
- In 1991 Francis Salemme is the boss and Charles Quintina is consigliere. Who is underboss at this point? there is not one listed. James Martorano is listed as a capo and Robert Deluca as a soldier, Deluca has been a frequent companion of Salemme since atleast 1990.
South Boston Gangs-Winter Hill-The Bulger Group
-In the late 1960s there is a gang war over control of South Boston activities, including the Mullins gang and the Killeen gang, Bulger being a part of the latter. Bulger asks for help ending the war from a Somerville based gang leader named Howard Winter. Winter agrees to help and mediates the end of the war which merges the two South Boston gangs in which Winter puts Bulger in control of, forming the South Boston Bulger Group. The Bulger group and the Winter Hill gang are two separate gangs although Bulger is in the employ of Winter and by extension Winter Hill.
-Winter Hill is headquartered at Marshall Motors, located at 12 Marshall St. in Somerville
-In 1979, Winter is convicted of racketeering(in connection with fixing horse races between Dec 1973 and Nov 1975) and incarcerated. Also indicted in the case are Bulger and Flemmi as unindictable co-conspirators, Deluca, and the Moartorano brothers. The group bribed jockeys in order to influence the outcome of races at Suffolk Downs in East Boston, Rockingham Race Track in Salem, New Hampshire, Lincoln Downs in Lincoln, RI, Pocono Race Track in Plains Township, Pennsylvania, Atlantics City Race Track, and Garden State Park in Cherry Hill, NJ. John Martorano goes on the lam but continues to be an active participant in the Bulger group until caught in January 1995. At the point Bulger and Flemmi become the leaders of remaining components of the Winter Hill gang.
The rise of Salemme
-In 1968, Salemme(along with Flemmi, Flemmi and Salemme have been closed associates since at least 1967) tried to murder informant Joseph Barboza's attorney John Fitzgerald. During 1967 Salemme and Flemmi also participated in the murders of Edward Bennett, Walter Bennett, William Bennett and Richard Grasso. Salemme is on the lam from 1969-73 whe he is caught in New York, he is in jail until 1988. When released he is inducted into the Patriarca family. Salemme survives an assassination attempt on June 16, 1989 in Saugus, Massachusetts. Also in June of 1969 Salemme is made a capo and placed in control of the Greater Boston area. Then in 1991 Salemme travels to New York where he is named the Boss of the Patriarca family. After becoming boss he extended his efforts to collect rent from illegal operations into Framingham and Milford, Mass and is assisted by his son, Patriarca family associate Thomas Hillary, and Framingham bookmaker John Snell. He also extends his reach into Lowell, Mass with the help of Patriarca family soldier Robert Deluca and associates Charles Flynn and Albert Gonsalves. With the help of his son and associates Thomas Hillary and Steven DiSarro he looks to expand gambling operation by placing video poker machines in restaurants and bars. Salemme and his son also begin trying to take over the rent payment of the Greater Boston area that had been controlled by several incarcerated member of the crime family including capo Vicent Ferrara and soldier Angelo Merurio. They are able to begin collecting rent from bookmakers Michael Dezotell and James Katz. Salemme also begins to coordinate the activities of the Patriarca family with the activites of the Winter Hill gang with the help of Flemmi and Kaufman.
-In December 1991 Salemme Sr. and Deluca asked Gambino family capo Natale Richichi of Las Vegas to come to Boston in order to discuss the structure and operation of the Patriarca crime family in New England. According to the indictment Richichi was brought in and his advice sought in setting up gambling and narcotics operations in the Greater Boston area. Any more info on this? Why a Gambino capo thats based in Vegas?
-Salemme and his son frequently travelled to Los Angeles and Las Vegas during 1990 and 1991 in order to bride union officials in Las Vegas and Boston.
-Francis Salemme Jr.(dead at time of indictment) was assigned to his father's crew when he became a capo. Was Salemme Jr. ever made?
Salemme's Patriarca Family
-James Martorano(brother of John) was a member of the Winter Hill gang in the 1970s. He is in jail from 1976-82. Upon release he continues his association with Buler, Flemmi and Kaufman. When Salemme is released from jail in 1988 he becomes closely associated with Martorano. Martorano is subsequently inducted into the Patriarca family and made a capo in 1991. Also in October 1991 Martorano traveled to New York and New Jersey to pursue a scheme to begin loansharking in Atlantic City with member and associates of the Genovese family.
-From 1967-the time of the indictment the Patriarca family operated a bookmaking operation in which they forced independent bookmakers to make extortion payments known as rent in order to operate their sports books. From 1970-78 the Winter Hill gang forced independent bookmakers to pay a percentage of their revenue in order to operate their sports book. From 1978 onward the Winter Hill gang began charging rent to the bookmakers instead of having them pay a percentage. Both groups also used their influence to resolve disputes that arose from the bookmakers operations as opportunities to extort money from the bookmakers and gambler involved in the disputes. The same thing is done by both groups in connection with loansharks.
-Joseph Yerardi Jr. of Newton, Mass ran a loansharking business and was forced to make rent payments to the Bulger group and at time the Salemmes. Yerardi also collected rent payments on behalf of the gang. Yerardi's loansharking was also financed in part by the gang. His loansharking operation is financed by James Martorano.
-Peter Fiumara owned a strip club known as Squire Lounge in Revere, Mass. were he operated a loansharking business. He was forced to pay rent to Salemme and Salemme Jr. Fiumara also interacted with Yerardi regarding certain mutual loanshark customers.
-Once he becomes a capo Salemme begins to use his influence to coordinate the activities of the Patriarca family with the activites of the Winter Hill gang with the help of Flemmi and Kaufman. Salemme presides over a sitdown in April of 1990 to resolve a dispute between Winter Hill controlled bookmaker Burton Krantz and Patriarca controlled bookmaker Vincent Roberto. Present at the sitdown are Salemme, Flemmi, Kaufman, family consigliere Charles Quintina, Krantz and Roberto. No other info is given regarding the dispute or the outcome of the sitdown.
-In June of 1991, as the newly crowned boss of the family, Salemme resolves a dispute involving Patriarca controlled bookmaker Michael Dezotell and Winter Hill associated gambler Kenneth Schiavo. Present are Flemmi, Deluca, James Martorano and Kaufman. No other info is given but you can assume this dispute is what gave Salemme the opportunity to begin collecting extortion/rent payments from Dezotell.
-In 1981 a dispute arose between Patriarca associated drug dealer Salvatore Michael Caruana and Winter Hill associated drug dealer Frank Lepere. The dispute rose over a large load of weed being distributed by an unconnected drug dealer in which both Lepere and Caruana attempted to collect rent on the shipment. Dispute is settled by payments being made to both Winter Hill and the Patriarca family.
Consolidating Power in South Boston
-Following the formation of the Bulger group in 1972, Bulger, John Martorano, Joseph McDonald and James Sims go about eliminating any threats to their power in South Boston (Flemmi does not come back to Boston until 1974 at which point he joins the Bulger Group), which is mainly a group lead by Al Notorangeli:

Al Plummer killed March 19, 1973, shot but not killed during this attack are Hugh Shiels and Frank Capizzi
William O'Brien killed March 24, 1973, shot but not killed is Ralph Dimasi

-On June 12, 1975 Bulger, Flemmi, and John M. kill Edward Connors in Dorchester because he has knowledge of the O'Toole murder
-On Nov 5, 1975 Buler kills Thomas King in South Boston. King was seen as a threat to Bulger's power and is buried by the Neponset River in Quincy
-On Nov 6, 1975 Bulger kills Francis Leonard in South Boston and leaves him to be found in Thomas King's car in a hope to divert attention from the King murder
-On Dec 30, 1976 Bulger and Flemmi kill Richard Castucci after learning he is providing info to LE on the location of McDonald and Sims
Bulger Group Members and Operations
-Since 1979 Bulger has often used Flemmi and George Kaufman as buffers. Winter Hill controls all of the illegal activities in South Boston through Bulger, who maintains a crew in said area. Bulger requires all drug dealers, loansharks and bookmakers to pay rent and purchase all of their drugs through sources designated by him. During the early 1980s Bulger collected rent from weed dealers Paul Moore and Willaim Shea. Bulger also collects rent through a crew member from a South Boston loansharking and cocaine operation ran by Paul Moore and Moore's cousin John Cherry.
-Flemmi was on the lam from 1969-74(same as Salemme), in 1974 Flemmi is offered induction into the Patriarca family but turns it down and decides to associate with Winter, John Martorano and Bulger. Flemmi does pledge his and Bulger loyalty to Patriarce though.
-John Martorano is a leader within the Winter Hill gang in the 1970s. He runs a large bookmaking operation on behalf of the gang and forces independent bookmakers to participate in the operation. He goes on the lam in 1979 when indicted but continues to participate in the activities of the gang until he is caught in January of 1995.
-George Kaufman(dead at time of indictment) had been a member of the Winter Hill gang since the 1970s. He collects extortion payments from loansharks and bookmakers on behalf of Flemmi and Bulger. Kaufman's duties also included getting authorization from Flemmi and Bulger to make loans for loansharks/bookmaking in need of financing as well as making arrangements for Bulger and Flemmi to resolve disputes. Kaufman also acted on behalf of John Martorano in his dealings with certain bookmakers and loansharks.
-The Bulger group is originally headquartered at the Triple O's Lounge located at 28 West Broadway in South Boston
-The Bulger group keeps a stash of weapons at the house of Kaufman located in Brookline until the house is sold in the late 1980s at which time the weapons were moved to the house of Flemmi's parents at 832 E. 3rd St in South Boston. Eventually some of the weapons are moved to the home of Kevin Weeks at 8 Pilsudski Way in South Boston
-Bulger and Flemmi provide money to John M. while he is on the run from 1978-1995 and do the same with McDonald and Sims from 1975-1982.
-William David Lindholm is a Boston based weed dealer who pays rent to the Bulger group from 1983-91. He is taxed a certain amount per pound of weed he distributes and during the period he distributed tens of thousands of pound. He pays Bulger, Flemmi, and James M. in excess of $500,000.
-In 1972 and 1974, Bulger, Winter and John M. collects rent payments from bookmakers Richard Wilgoren and Burton Krantz
-Bulger and Flemmi collect rent payment from the following individuals through their association with Kaufman:
Burton Krantz(Jan 1979-June 1992)
Edward Lewis(Jan 1978-June 1992)
Thomas Ryan(May 1991-Dec 1991)
Richard Brown(1989-June 1992)
Mitchell Zukoff(1987-May 1990)
Howard Levenson(late 1980s-June 1993)
Bernard Weisman(1988-June 1992)
James Katz(Jan 1985-June 1993)
-During the course of the indictment the Bulger group collects rent and imposes lump sum fines on the following drugs dealers:
Jeseph and Michael Murray
Michael Caruana
Frank Lepere
David Lindholm
William and John Shea
Paul Moore
Joseph Tower
John Cherry
Hubart Willis
Still a work in progress. Thanks go to Pogo for listings of additional capos not listed in the indictments.

Re: Bulger Indictment Info
Samual Granito was also a Capo in 1981. Paul Intiso may have been one as well. For 1989 Salvatore Giglia, Angelo “Chester” Iaconi and Edward "Mulligan" Romano were also Capos. I'm not postive but I believe Alexander ”Sonny Boy" Rizzo was the UnderBoss during Salemme's reign (not sure if he was in 1991).

Re: Bulger Indictment Info
Correction it was Nicola Giso who was a Capo in 1981. Not Paul Intiso.
I have a Boston chart from 1983 that lists him as an Acting Capo for Danny Anguilo.

Re: Bulger Indictment Info
That's crazy. Did Limone still have business on the street or was it strictly a respect thing with him? I've read he was a nightclub owner when he went to jail. Did his family still own these places?Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 2:58 pm Correction it was Nicola Giso in 1981 who was a Capo. Not Paul Intiso.
I have a Boston chart from 1983 that lists him as an Acting Capo for Danny Anguilo.

Re: Bulger Indictment Info
I wasn’t around in 1991 during that time period, but I beleive there was a disputed with Kenny guarino regarding porn or something hence the meeting with richichi. It was part of the case cuz the hotel room was bugged and they over heard the feds when listening, and it became a dangerous situation for the saint and deluca....regarding the dezotellmtalk, I assume this is public knowledge and papers? I am of the belief that dezotell testified or gave statements to this, where it’s public, if you have this info, can it be posted?Or sent pm?

according to this article Luigi (Baby Shacks) Manocchio was the underPogo The Clown wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 2:17 pm Samual Granito was also a Capo in 1981.

I'm always leery when ScottB is the only source for something. Besides it wouldn't be the first time he has made up quotes for his articles or gotten wrong what was testified to at a trial (case in point the recent Chicago thread). Looking over the quotes again they read a bit iffy if you know what I mean.

I hear ya , I just figured anyone wouldn’t claim a source from a court proceeding that can be easily checked ,Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Sat Aug 25, 2018 5:24 pm I'm always leery when ScottB is the only source for something. Baby Shacks ManocchioDPG wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 1:29 pm- In 1991 Francis Salemme is the boss and Charles Quintina is consigliere. Who is underboss at this point? there is not one listed. James Martorano is listed as a capo and Robert Deluca as a soldier, Deluca has been a frequent companion of Salemme since atleast 1990.
It was said in the Salemme/Weadick trial, Flemmi admitted to ratting out to where Salemme was hiding resulting in his arrest and being caught. I think he also implicated Boston heavyweight Larry Zannino in the bombing, saying that they were dressed as mechanics as they got out and placed the bomb under the car in the day time it seemed (Flemmi didn't say the time of day but it was hinted it was during the day).-In 1968, Salemme(along with Flemmi, Flemmi and Salemme have been closed associates since at least 1967) tried to murder informant Joseph Barboza's attorney John Fitzgerald. During 1967 Salemme and Flemmi also participated in the murders of Edward Bennett, Walter Bennett, William Bennett and Richard Grasso. Salemme is on the lam from 1969-73 whe he is caught in New York, he is in jail until 1988.
Patriarca Sr. was against dealing with porn in Rhode Island so somehow Kenneth Guarino got involved and ran the porn for the New England mafia as well for the Gambino's. It seems that Richichi was a partner with Guarino because during one meeting (not sure if it was the same meeting) Salemme told Richichi he couldn't put up anymore peep shows in Rhode Island and that what he already had was Grandfathered in and any new ones could not go up. I'd assume since they had ties to Guarino that is how they knew him and why they used him in that meeting. Once again this came from DeLuca.-In December 1991 Salemme Sr. and Deluca asked Gambino family capo Natale Richichi of Las Vegas to come to Boston in order to discuss the structure and operation of the Patriarca crime family in New England. According to the indictment Richichi was brought in and his advice sought in setting up gambling and narcotics operations in the Greater Boston area. Any more info on this? Why a Gambino capo thats based in Vegas?
Oddly enough, Stephen DiSarro and Kenneth Guarino were pallbearers for Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Bevilacqua. If I'm not mistaken the same Bevilacqua that Patriarca Sr. paid to get his pardon that sprung Patriarca Sr. into eventually being the head of the New England Mafia. DiSarro and Guarino were also involved with building some condos in Rhode Island as well.
I don't think I've seen anything stating he was made, but as usual I could be wrong. This time period is not quite my strong point.-Francis Salemme Jr.(dead at time of indictment) was assigned to his father's crew when he became a capo. Was Salemme Jr. ever made?
Another note of interest, Junior Patriarca told Salemme that DeLuca should leave Frank Lepere alone because they had a plan to kidnap him and I assume either hold him for ransom or shake him down as he was a pretty big dealer at the time.-In 1981 a dispute arose between Patriarca associated drug dealer Salvatore Michael Caruana and Winter Hill associated drug dealer Frank Lepere. The dispute rose over a large load of weed being distributed by an unconnected drug dealer in which both Lepere and Caruana attempted to collect rent on the shipment. Dispute is settled by payments being made to both Winter Hill and the Patriarca family.
Flemmi's cop brother Michael Flemmi was convicted of moving the weapons out of their parents house.-The Bulger group keeps a stash of weapons at the house of Kaufman located in Brookline until the house is sold in the late 1980s at which time the weapons were moved to the house of Flemmi's parents at 832 E. 3rd St in South Boston. Eventually some of the weapons are moved to the home of Kevin Weeks at 8 Pilsudski Way in South Boston
Hope some of this helped out.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....

Yeah, Guarino was reportedly paying Richichi $15,000 a month.dixiemafia wrote:Patriarca Sr. was against dealing with porn in Rhode Island so somehow Kenneth Guarino got involved and ran the porn for the New England mafia as well for the Gambino's.
