Portland, Maine Gambling Bust

Post by JCB1977 »

I missed this back in May. Pretty significant to say the least.

Some related articles below. Seems Mardigan was also big into real estate and something of a slumlord. There's also mention of some Brichettos who were involved in oxycodone trafficking but really no mention of any mob connections.

What I find absolutely insane is that this operation has been going on for the better part of 2 decades (probably much longer according to sources) and he just now fell onto the radar of law enforcement? This was as big if not bigger than any gambling operation the New England LCN ran and "nobody" interfered with it? Billy Angelesco lives pretty close to Portland so I am surprised that Mardigan wasn't shaken down or forced to go into partnership with New England LCN.

I'm not that surprised. If anything, the Patriarca family's sphere of influence has been shrinking over the last 20 years, not expanding. Little to no activity left in Connecticut. Handful of members left in Providence. Most of the family's remaining presence is in Boston. Portland, Maine may be in New England but it might as well be Portland, Oregon.

The Patriarca did have some people in Portland at one time. Don't think it ever went past the 70s though.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

I don't disagree with you at all Wiseguy...My shock is the fact that this has been going on for a minimum of two decades. We all know even 15 years ago, the New England LCN was a force to be reckoned with. Portland is 95 miles North of Boston, much easier to get to than Connecticut.

I remember Ray Sr. had some representation in Maine back in the 1960's but I don't know much about who was actually there. From anything I have read, I was always under the impression that Maine was "open territory."

I remember reading something Pogo, back in the 1960's. It possibly may have been MF files. I'm just shocked that this has been going on for so long and nobody (made guys and associates) ever made a move on this guy.

Here are a few things I found on Portland, ME gambling scene:

https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... 5&tab=page

https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... 20gambling (Joseph & Orlando Napolitano)

https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.htm ... 7&tab=page (This has a chart of the Patriarca Crime Family Reps 1963 and listed Joseph & Orlando Napolitano as Representatives of Ray Sr in Portland, ME)

ray sr had people up there, one guy I know in particular was there and back a lot, went away in early 70s for murder...regarding the size, jcb, I disagree, there are guys today active with bigger books, maybe they haven't been picked up and not in your files, but that doesn't mean they aren't bigger, I can name 4 without even thinking about it, can lose or win a million in a weekend during football, not handle, LOSE or WIN, all 4 been in the papers at one time or another, so the size in this Portland case was a nice size no doubt, but not close to as big as some of these others..far as billy hearing or going after the guy, I doubt it..

The main operation appears to have netted $11.3 over an 8 year period. It's hard to make direct comparisons without more specific info but it looks like it could have been as big as some New England mob bookmaking operations and even bigger than others (looking at the cases over the last 20 years). However, that's comparing the Main operation to any single New England LCN operation and obviously the mob in New England has more than one. In terms of total money, the Patriarcas are a bigger operation.

I agree with you TJ. I was basically trying to say that it was very big “for a free agent” and “as big” as many LCN books. I’m sure there are some who do much heavier action. My main point was that this was a consistent, uninterrupted operation for at least 2 decades without LCN infiltration. So many LCN associates and made guys don’t pull in that kind of cash.
