Recent research has revealed pretty much who did it. So, it's not proven, but it's not a total mystery anymore.

Refresh my memory. Who were the guy's involved? Thanks.
This isn't 100% confirmed and never will be, but based on the best research:

Probable shooters/"fake cops"

Fred "Killer" Burke
Fred Goetz
Ray "Crane Neck" Nugent
Bob Carey

Probable driver

Gus Winkeler

Probable lookouts

Jimmy "The Swede" Morand
Byron Bolton

Thanks man, I had no idea that there were suspects who were responsible.

Did Capone farm out the hit? I don't recall if the killers were members of the Outfit.

Most were St. Louis guys, affiliated with something called Egan's Rats, and non-Italian. (They were called Capone's "American Boys".)

Sending in notorious Chicago Italian gangsters in as fake cops wouldn't have worked.

Winkeler and Goetz later became part of the Outfit, but both were wacked out under Nitti. These guys were all killed or died in jail eventually.

I was confused, was it Capone who told them to kill?

Capone was almost certainly ultimately behind it, yes.

For the complete story. They are both superb.

I forgot to mention that there is apparently more evidence that Claude Maddox was the mastermind rather than McGurn. I don't have my books in front of me, so I forget the details.

Capone probably really did order it from the top though.

But why the link to McGurn and the massacre when he got wacked. Didn't the killers of McGurn leave a valentine card on his body??

I think his killing on Valentine's Day was just a coincidence. IIRC, the valentine card was something that McGurn already had in his possession, and that thing about the killers leaving it on his body as a symbol was just a legend that arose later.

Thanks Villain.

What do you think of the rumor that Moran hunted down Bob Carey in New York and whacked him personally as revenge? Apparently later in life Moran would get drunk and brag about it, but it seems far-fetched to me.
