Pittsburgh Mafia/Gambling

Post by ddeep84 »

Hi guys,

My dad was John Deep, he passed away in 2000. He ran the gambling operations for Bobby I in the 70's and later on with Junior Williams in the 80's. I've done some digging and the the below articles are the only ones that I could find not hidden behind a pay wall. I have plenty of stories that I'd love to share and have a couple pictures that I can post of my dad and Junior Williams up his camp that my dad built for him in Tionesta.

My dad owned Charlie Brown's bar which he renamed to Mr. Lucky's after he got sued by Charlie Schulz (true story) in Bridgeville, PA. He also owned the Galerie/Orsini's which is now The Railyard in Bridgeville. These were all places that Bobby I and other Pittsburgh LCN would frequent back in the day. He also owned several apartments and townhouses that his guys would rotate around to take their bets. All bets were written on rice paper with a bucket of water next to them in case of a bust. After my dad got out of Lewisburg, he and Bobby I had a falling out. I don't know the details or time frame but he later became (or maybe already was) good friends with Junior Williams. He started working for/with Junior and ran the 900 Club in McKees Rocks for him until it got busted in 1989.

A lot of you seem very knowledgeable and I was hoping to get more information regarding the Pittsburgh gambling scene back then and if I'm lucky enough, information/stories regarding my dad. I have more one off stories that I've heard from my dad and others that I can share if people are interested. Hope to hear back from you guys!

Derek

Were you aware of a second generation Jewish book-maker that was in the used car business on Baum Blvd.?
I met him through Henry. When we were together, we would visit him and pick up rather large envelopes.
Like his Father, he paid tribute to John LaRocca's Family. I grew up with Charlie, Jo Jo and Michael.

No I personally never heard of anyone like that. I'll talk to my brother though, he heard more stories from my dad and remembers way more names than I do.

My dad ran the 900 Club for Junior which was raided and my dad was arrested in 1989. The charges were dropped because they deemed the bust illegal. Any who, after that went down my mom gave my dad an ultimatum, us or booking. He went to become a full time contractor after that and was successful. He would still take some action from close friends but nothing like his hey days in the 70's and 80's.

The funny thing about that story is that I didn't know all of it until last week. I found a newspaper article that mentioned the 900 Club and I asked my mom about it. I was always under the impression that my dad was out of the major gambling scene before I was born, 1984. Weird how I'm still learning new things even to this day.

Funny enough I joined the other forum because of a post I found from JCB about 4 years or so ago that mentioned my dad running the 900 Club for Junior. That's what made me start digging and I found the article about the bust. Once I verified that it was all true from my mom, I joined the forum and private messaged JCB hoping to hear some more info and where he heard that from. I saw that he wasn't active on that forum any more and I figured that I hit a dead end. I'm glad to see that he's on this forum and hope to hear from him!!
