Santo Virruso thread- Chicago Outfit

Post by cavita »

Another thread, this time on Virruso who apparently was an old time Chicago LCN member that seemed to be very influential later on in life. Below are the few things I've been able to dig up on him-

Santo Virruso:

November 1, 1894 born in Pietraperzia, Sicily

March 23, 1911 immigrated through Boston, Massachusetts on the S.S. Canopic

November 2, 1927 was arrested in New York under the name Phillip Sarino- charges unknown.

November 6, 1931 naturalized in Chicago.

Novebmer 23, 1933 arrested in Aurora, Illinois by U.S. Marshals at the request of the Italian consul in Chicago on a charge of three murders. Virruso was wanted in Sicily for the November 16, 1922 murder of Antonio Romano and for the later murders of Romano’s two brothers.

March 24, 1934 extradition and deportation proceedings were halted against Virruso when U.S. Commissioner Edwin K. Walker ruled there was insufficient evidence against Virruso whose trial was held in his absence.

January 4, 1936 principal suspect Angelo Lazzia, wanted in the murder of State Representative Alfred J. Prignano of Chicago, was found in reality to be Virruso. It seems Virruso was not charged in this murder as well.

1965 was the longtime owner of the Hollywood Beach, Florida Shorecrest Apartments at 2750 N. Surf Road but sold the apartments to a firm.

September 17, 1976 died in Los Angeles, California

Good stuff thanks, I think he was also a member of the Chicago heights faction and was a hitman for the Outfit and I also think that he had a brother who was also in the Mob or something like that

In the 1960s the FBI questioned a Milwaukee informant about Virruso and he gave them some info. They also asked about Virruso's brother Salvatore but the informant said he had seen him in a long time and did not know where he was. This could be who you're referring to.

Never heard of him before. But very interesting. Got away with killing a state senator. Sounds like he never was convicted of any crimes. Was he originally with a New York or New Jersey Family? Is his birth place near Phil Bacino hometown?

Yes, Sam was his brother. Both were identified as Outfit members. Eventually, they ended up in Florida, although I don't know much beyond that.

I don't think he was made until he came to Chicago. His birthplace was in the province of Enna and the closest big town was Caltanissetta, which was a mafia stronghold in its own right.

I wonder why he was back in Sicily to kill eleven years after he came to the US.

Interesting character, did he come to Chicago because of Torrio and or Capone?

Sounds like he was a through and through outfit member rather then coming into the outfit through another group.
