New Castle, PA gambling bust

Post by JCB1977 »

I thought I posted this a while back but I did not. The Medure Family is pretty well known in the area, they owned one of the most successful Italian restaurants for years that was pretty mobbed up. They also own commercial properties and allowed Henry “Zebo” Zottola and Lou Raucci to set up two front companies in their buildings, S & S Carpet and a Pasta Company. Angelo Medure, Father and Grandfather of Big Frank and Little Frank is mentioned in US News & World Report on the 1997 Rincon Indian Casino attempted takeover by the Pittsburgh Family. They are tied to Carmen Schick, grandson to Carmen Ambrosia who was a real estate developer and land owner who was mobbed up for years. Schick was building a casino a few miles from the Youngstown and Ohio state line in Mahoning Twp, PA but was alleged to have mob ties.

Wow I never knew about this. I went to school with the Medure kids and used to eat at the restaurant all the time.

Most of my family settled in the Hillsville/New Castle/Youngstown area when they came over from Italy. I remember having my first communion party at Medure's Restaurant as well as my reconciliation. BEST butterflied smelts on the planet.

It's really a shame what's happened to New Castle. It was named worst place to live in PA last year. It's supposedly the heroin pipeline between Detroit and Pittsburgh.

Population: 23,290

When you’re looking at science and data, the city of New Castle is by far the worst place you can live in the state of Pennsylvania. Let’s see why.

First off, New Castle has the 6th highest crime rate in the state of Pennsylvania. Is that a surprise? You have a 1 in 21 chance of being the victim of a property crime for every year you spend in New Castle city limits. That means a lot of stolen laptops, cell phones and hoagies.

Plus, in terms of violent crimes, you have a 1 in 108 chance of being the victim of a violent crime such as a rape or aggravated assault.

Additionally, at 6.7%, New Castle has the 11th highest unemployment rate in PA, and home values are only $58,000.

Considering New Castle falls well below the state average in all other statistics, it’s simply far and away the worst place you can live if you make Pennsylvania your home. No wonder the population here has dropped 11% in the last 10 years.

New Castle is located an hour north of Pittsburgh.

I agree. It was one of the largest Italian enclaves in the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at one time but most of the Italians moved to Neshannock Twp and surrounding suburbs. Even when I was a kid in the late 70's and early 80's, the town was still bustling and the railroad was still running. That whole corridor of the old Rte 60 going into Sharon, PA was the very heart of the earliest days of the black hand and mafia. Most people don't know that the Ohio River Valley had the largest influx of Southern Italians in the country. And now it's a shithole

Wow this is amazing. I lived on Winslow Ave as a baby before moving to the North Hill. Went to school with Gennocks, Moses, Scungio's and Nativios. When I was in High School our Athletic Director was this guy Angelo Fornatero. He had a bunch of us kids taking bets with weekly football pools. We had been doing it since the 5th grade and I never realized it was gambling as a kid. In fact my dad would give me the dollar a week it cost. Long after I graduated he got arrested finally.
JCB have you ever been to the "Bahamas" quarry in Hillsville? That was our spot! Also ever been to Bailey's restaurant on the East Side? That was my parents place. I worked there for years as a kid.

I'm not from that area. But it is very interesting to see
how close together Warren, Akron, New Castle, Cleveland, Youngstown and
even Pittsburgh are on the map. And every town had its own mob guys.
Reminds me of NYC - NJ = Philly area. One giant swath of bookies and shylocks.

I grew up in Poland so the next town over was Hillsville...I had Aunts and uncles and cousins who still live in Hillsville and the Bahamas was where we used to cut school and go swimming

Don't forget Steubenville, OH (home of Dino Crocetti aka Dean Martin, Lou Holtz..and mob heavyweights Jimmy Tripodi and Cosmo Quattrone), Weirton, WV (Silvio "Birdie" Pinciaro was the guy in Weirton). Wheeling, WV (Bill Lias then Paul Hankish ran the rackets there), Erie, PA where James "Westfield Jimmy" Salamone and Serafino Romeo ran that area and Canton, OH where Pat Feruccio ran that town with an iron fist.

Here are some nice links to Indiana, PA...which has a massive history of organized crime, especially during the bootlegging days. Sam Adornato was the guy there for a long time, he was close with Paul Romeo and Dominic Mallamo of Youngstown.

I believe S&S was the low bidder on a big job at the Pittsburgh Airport. I also believe the FBI got involved.
Rocca's Pastawas actuall made in that building. It was the best Homemade Pasta, so good that I served it in my restaurant.

There are a couple Profaci/Colombo members that were born in New Castle. Simone Andolino and Cosimo D'Amico. Do you know their history?
